I never found the deer I shot point blank with a flintlock so I am as guilty as anyone else… Still bothers me Why use a flintlock if u can kill one with a bow. I’m a total idiot and green horn. If I can take a deer swiftly and legally with a compound bow, anyone can!
I feel like recurve is a definite possibility

I never found the deer I shot point blank with a flintlock so I am as guilty as anyone else… Still bothers me It can happen to anyone. But what you said is true... the mentality that they have a rifle because there's a scope and nothing to draw/ hold back and a rock solid rest leads to a lot of wounded deer. I've seen it a lot in PA lol. You said it. PA… lol

Eat your heart out. Hi I’m Trapperbless, I use a crossbow, and I like it Bad neck from football and a bad shoulder from baseball. I have been successful with and could still use a compound but prefer the crossbow. 12 yards on the deer, 15 yards on Tom Jake at the bottom was a spot and stalk. Belly crawled through brush to about 30 yards on the edge of field. He came in on a string after a couple clucks. 6 yard shot. Never would’ve happened with a vertical bow. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/08/full-19464-267410-img_1207.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/08/full-19464-267415-img_0250.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/08/full-19464-267416-img_3673.jpeg)

I hate crossbows. Thats my opinion Also, since the topic is hot, I think compounds severely degraded archery as a whole. The game used to be getting close and learning your trajectory. Now its an ego trip to show how far one can shoot with the pins, rectifiers, range finders, doinkers, stabilizers, and so on. 3d shoots are eye opening. Compounders have to be so serious like their wife made them go, no smiles, take forever. The trad shoots are a breath of fresh air, much like black powder shoots. Generally, the trad guys are getting it done with many of the crutches and pragmatically, it does make them better. They were invented about the same time. Many, many years ago. Some say the long bow was around longer. And it likely was. Still have to get close to your game animal. I know long bow shooters that can hit targets a long way away. Tim McGraw used to shoot deer and buffalo at 100 yards don’t ya know. lol. But still, they are still a short range method of take on game animals. It comes down to folks not knowing their effective range on a game animals. A lot can happen when an arrow is in flight. A fast bow is 400 feet per second, speed of sound is around 1100. They can hear it coming and a lot can happen during that time it takes an arrow or bolt to reach its target. Folks just aren’t proficient with their method of take sometimes, no matter if it’s a firearm or archery.

But he has facts Yes Sir. Well he has one study that supports what he wants to believe. So there is that. No need to look further. He is happy with his training wheel bow.
Just so you know PA guy. I shoot a training wheel bow also. I plan to get a recurve though. My boys shoot recurve. And when they can draw 30# they will probably hunt with one.
I personally don’t use a crossbow, not my thing. But I don’t have any issue if someone else uses one.
Im not sure about his facts... first he says crossbows are too easy then he says they wound too many deer. Im wondering if he bats from both sides if u know what I mean Probably calls in the DH if you know what I mean.

I think yessir and Delaware should share a blind together this year and commiserate. I'm done engaging with both of you. You've added nothing constructive to this thread. State your opinion and move on. I've obviously hurt some egos, jeez

Since we are dealing in facts I've been bowhunt 35 years now and killed all my deer but one with a vertical bow. One with a crossbow. Probably about 7 years ago. But I promise you the one I killed with the crossbow was probably a more challenging hunt than what the vast of the hunters participate in. Dang you reminded me. I too have killed a deer with a crossbow. Hi I’m Rob… and I’ve used a crossbow…. Lol

Sorry we ran you off because we didn’t agree with you. Guess that’s a you problem. Hope your day gets better and the evil crossbow hunters don’t keep you awake while eating their fresh backstraps.

Not a fan of x bows, big, bulky, loud and I hate scopes. But my son started shooting deer at 10. Couldn't do that with a compound. He shoots a compound now. My wife uses a crossbow. My 79 year old dad uses a x bow. It gets more hunters out hunting. Its a dying sport. Very few kids out hunting. Yyp. Glad they are out hunting with what works for them. Don’t let the woke haters hate on them. Might have some blue hair dye folks around here.

PA if u think ur opinion hurt my ego u run in a pretty small circle friend I was actually enjoying this thread on a Friday night. I hate to see you quit.
Oh and you never really engaged any of the points I made.
Unless agreeing with me I might be an idiot and I guess if you were calling me a crybaby is engaging me.
