Jamestown was a proto-socialist settlement. They ditched that idea pretty quickly Jonestown , was even worse , communism hidden under religion. That idea died rather quick after it fell apart. " Don't drink the Kool aid "

Again,,,Russia and China are not communist. Both have embraced capitalism Rebranding the communism of Russia and China as "State Capitalism" doesn't change what it is and how it works any more than rebranding illegal aliens as "undocumented immigrants" changes what they are. Rebranding is a trick used by politicians to fool the uninformed.

The book "Animal Farm" explained it pretty well. "We are all equal........it's just that some are more equal than others".
Founding fathers........and their ancestors.........had lived under aristocratic rule used in Europe. Gentry and commoners. Were ruled by people whose sole claim to fame was they were lucky enough to have been born to right parents. So founders, wanting to avoid all that, set up our system of government based on individual rights and rule of law, where success or failure in life determined by one's own actions. That system has built USA into the most successful country in history of the world.
Problem with our system is there are people not motivated enough to succeed and after the communist / socialist stuff started showing up 100 years or so ago, people bought into the idea of something for nothing. If there are more people with that idea than the other, easy to get elected running on platform of "from those according to ability, to those according to need". Free cheese.
Loki may have been right. The human condition really may be we crave subjugation.........freedom and self sufficiency just too hard for most.
BTW, ever notice how many immigrants from all parts of the world come here and thrive? While those born here muddle along in squalor? Those immigrants come from societies where there is no social welfare system. No means of backup. Work or starve. They come here highly motivated, work hard and thrive. That is the reason they get credit for doing work nobody here will do. Our bunch, now dependent on welfare and such, only work hard at gaming the system for more free stuff.
Easy to vote your way into socialism, but impossible to vote your way out of it.

It is an economic system where the government owns the means of production. Plenty of this throughout the world including the U.S. Most countries consist of mixed economies with a mix of private and government ownership of the means of production.
"goods and services are distributed based on individual need, following the principle "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs"."
There is a ton of this going on these days.
Almost all government programs require you to prove how needy you are.

You asked about Putin and communism in the OP,,,,,,,and then posted this link What’s up???? My take on that poll is that about 50% of Americans are just plain stupid; both left and right.

Social/communism look good on paper but never factor in two human traits, greed and laziness All people are equals, except that some are more equal than the rest!.

The Hutterites have a commune type of lifestyle system but under the “we all work for the colony” they want to better their life like any good capitalist does. Lots of side hustles going on for personal enrichment like any person.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

The glaring fault with socialism/ communism/ marxism is that they oppress the human spirit.....That's why they never thrive long term.

Isn't it true that communism had deeper beginnings than with Marx in the 1840's. Plato wrote the Republic in 375 BC. Plato had ideas about two forms of communism. One was communism of property and the other was communism of wives. Didn't he consider those as too personal and a distraction from ones loyalty to the state?
Was the early church socialist? Theres been varying forms of communism/socialism through the ages, but they've been rather small scaled if they survived any period of time. Most family units are a form of communism/socialism if you think about it. Never really as an country wide system of government. Facism where while the state doesnt own the means of production but is in collusion with the large corporations was probably been more prevalent/successful.

No God under Communism ,OK in Socialism God is present, just not acceptable in communism because He would be in competition with their ideology. Plato was writing in that 400 yr time frame when the Holy Spirit had withdrew. Plato was searching for light with the only thing he had available to him which was philosophy. It was in that time when Plato penned the "The Allegory Of The Cave" (possibly dialogue between Socrates and Plato's brother as Socrates was killed). It illustrates a captive audience. The irony is that while Plato was presenting his ideals in the Republic there was a cure contained within when one escaped and experienced the true sight instead of shadows. While socialism maybe had no name the disciples were practicing a form of it with all things in common. Ananias and Sapphira had a bad experience when they withheld a part. I think the point was they could have held back part as it was theirs to give but lied about it and thus the problem. That is also an instance that shows God judges individuals. Sapphira came in 3 hrs later and sealed her fate by lying too. I don't think Jesus taught against free trade because he used the parable of the talents in which one hid his money instead of investing it and turning a profit. Paul and Silas had an encounter with a slave girl that was used in forecasting prices for the buyers and sellers of the day. Wonder if she was a Martha Stewart and was insider trading, lol. She was set free but Paul and Silas went to jail ! As Crager mentioned above, Jones was caught up with communal living and socialist ideals all of which wreaked with power, control , sex, drugs and greed. All of which can happened even in any free setting, but its easier implemented with a captive audience.
