Hey all... I got a new puppy and when he gets older I want to put in a way to let him run free but never leave the area around my cabin. I am gonna try the electric fence with a receiver collar. I am undecided between the underground wire around the perimeter type and the wireless kind with a transmitter in a central location and a receiver on the dog.. Anybody use these and any tips or pros and cons to think about ! Thanks

I have the home transmitter and collar receiver - fenceless. Couldnt be more pleased with it over the last 12 years. Never had a dog “break out”. A benefit I do see with the in ground wire is more freedom to allow where you want the dog to go and not go.

If you have a bunch of stray dogs in the area - the fence or fenceless model do not keep strays out. Our dogs have been very quick to learn where they can and cannot go.

With either system - plug the transmitter into an uninterruptible power supply - so when power goes out, you have time to get collar off dog. When power goes out and transmitter goes out - collar can shock.

I use the Halo GPS system and am extremely happy with it, you can actually draw the boundaries you want to allow your dog to have access to, that works out great when I am traveling and need to set a new area to cover

Another plus is the collar shows your dogs position in real time

A con is it’s not cheap running in the 500 mark but it’s worth it

My opinion anyways

We dont habmve a fence. We go out with them on a lead when needed as pups. As they learn their area we just standd on the porch and letting them do their business. Once they mature we just opent the door and let them out. They come let us know when they want in our come when called.

Yes we havd 96 acres but the old house whas built way back when they built them 20' off the road.

my cousin had the under ground wire system put in and it works great for him. Made me think about one when we got the new pup. But my daughter took on training him and ther was no need

Dosnt work with every dog sadly. My dog would be halfway across the county chasing critters if I let her out without anything.

true my daughter has our dogs trained well enough she can call them off a deer during hot pursuit. Walk through crowds off leash on German heal command. Not many Dogs are trained as well.

The underground system my cousin put in worked well for him and I was impressed with it. His dogs are not trained well. Basic come and sit commands and not 100% solid on that. I was impressed becuse i didn't know how well they would keep a dog in with a lot of prey drive. but it worked on his dogs
so seems that concern was unfounded.

I have had both the buried fence and the wireless. They both work great. If you have room for the wireless where the dog can run in the circle and not overlap the neighbors or get into places you don't want them, that's the one I'd choose. We actually had two transmitters that overlapped some the dogs had a bigger area to run when we lived in the acreage.

Take your puppy with you every chance you get and make it fun during your time together keep them in a range your comfort with my dog hates to feel alone, even outside she’s only 7 months old and still needs work but she’s not going anywhere soon it looks like. Took her to MO a few weeks ago she stuck in the 20 yard range the whole time.

I didn't want to bore anyone with pictures... but if You insist.......... in the 2nd picture young Thunder ( 3/4ths lab and 1/4th eskimo) is standing over his predecessor's grave and tombstone. Ole Sampson made it past 14 years and now is forever on the high banks of the creek that runs past my cabin !! [Linked Image]

Yes there is a bred of dog called eskimo. The American Eskimo comes in 3 sizes. Thunder's pedigree has the standard size Eskimo in it. They are known for being super smart dogs. Should be a great cross with a lab. Thunder is pretty much almost all a light colored cream... hair like a lab. Just what I wanted. He is smart... super smart. Was retrieving at 9 weeks old. A true puppy as he has to be in everything and anything... but he does listen when I strongly say the word NO !! [Linked Image]
