And don’t forget corn piles

Don't have many white oaks here. The few we did have about 90%+ were toppled last September by the hurricane.

No need to plant those for me as Im 60 years old...I'll never see an acorn off those slow growing white oaks.

Hurricanes seem to be the prime issue here.

Those rascals can go on and git.

Stop over cooking your meat! It isn’t gamey, it’s over cooked!

Gordon Ramsey, maybe…

Wasn't much of an issue until Helene hit us directly with well over 100mph winds for hours. Hadn't had one like that here in my lifetime.

Plant hazelnuts instead. They get nuts quick. I picked some nuts today from some 2 year planted trees.

The deer ate most of the nuts directly off the bushes about 3 weeks ago.

You know what they say…..the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago lol.

Anybody know anything about Nuttall Oaks? We’re doing a 900 tree planting soon and there’s 150 Nuttalls in the mix, along with pin oak, swamp white oak, and pecan.

I put in 10 nuttall oak this spring, bare root seedlings. They look happy in the tubes. The seem to be off to a quicker start than swamp whites I put in a couple years ago. That's all I know so far.

I have had decent sawtooth acorn crops. Have 20 or so trees planted. Also have about a dozen pears planted. What variety of pear are you seeing the best results from? I planted four swamp white oaks in my yard and they started producing at around age 8, they are 11 now and are loaded with acorns. I am thinking about ordering more of them to plant in my deer orchard.

I planted 4 STO around 15-16 years ago in my yard and for the last 4 years they have produce a lot of acorns. I have picked up and planted 1000's of Saw tooth acorns and seedlings in my area. I have one that is close to my shop that is now dropping acorns on my roof. Sounds like a 22 going off when they hit the metal roof

Planted some Nuttall here a few years ago and all did poorly. Poorly to me is growing really slow and could tell from experience that they were never going to amount to anything so they are gone and planted something else instead. MDC sent some Chinkapin oaks as a replacement a few years ago. Out of 7 planted 3 died and the other 4 are stagnant. Swamp white oaks in the same planting are all doing well. Have had really good luck with the Swamp White Oaks through the years. Now as long as some invasive bug or disease doesn't come along and kill them. With the Nuttalls I'm not sure if it was our heavier soil or winter temps. Pin oaks and swamp white oaks have done excellent over several plantings. Saw that the Nuttall were supposed to have faster growth than Pin Oaks so planted some but they are originally a southern tree so thought that's maybe why they didn't do well.

Clay,

Based on this info on the soil preferences, I may look into getting some nuttal oak seedlings. They should grow well in the dark alluvial soils I have near the river.

All the pears Ive planted are oriental pear variety. I get a little blight in a few of them but they came thru this last blight OK.
