Skunks are worth somethin. Lets setup and run an imaginary skunk line in here. What traps we using? Where we setting? Bait? Deterring opossums? A guy could run box traps at every bridge between work and home on multiple routes right? Is that how you'd do it?

Saw a “cool” tip to refrigerate skunks so they are cool when you remove the sacks and they are less likely to spray.

What else you got?

My dog has been smelling like skunk lately so I know there's at least one on my farm.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Here it would seem there are more on the private property than public forest. Mowed grass and out buildings/junk piles can hold more than big woods. Bear baits and farms are good draws as well as field edges and old pastures. My go to traps are dog proofs and live traps. Prebaiting them to an area that is convenient to trap works well. I acquired 100 gallons of mink feed from a mink ranch and I will auger a dirt hole, fill it with feed and if its gone when I am setting traps, I know that I can expect some action, if its still there then I move on and focus on more active areas.

Good luck

Old logging brush piles held them but with all of the chipping going on they might far and few between.

You couldn't afford that many box traps. And theft could be a big problem.

Hello Mr Lawdog describe what you do to the cans. do you notch them for the spring? Deeply or shallow? Drive a stake right through them to keep them from rolling? Sound like a plan.....Thanks.....jk

I have maybe 50 #10 cans the plan has been to double notch the sides and run steel rod left over from rat trapping to anchor them. We have a lot of less traveled roads out here just off the state highways after harvest it’s not uncommon some days to only see the mailman in a day of checking traps. Lots of culverts under the roads or across the field approach's that hold skunks often.

Our current numbers are way down I’m getting 20% of my normal catch numbers before they froze out and have been slow to recover. I have places where theres pockets of them that I had on my cat cams last year. I’ll probably focus on those and past places that produce every year.

I have caught lots of skunks in or near groundhog holes in old barns, under fallen down barns or under junk piles. I have an egg dump for eggs that don't hatch, that's a great place to catch skunks. Stinky eggs make great bait for skunks. Opossums, coon, fox and coyotes like stinky eggs too.
