Nope, at the time, they just wanted to take out the competition. Same thing going on across the middle east, Ukraine, and Venezuela as we speak.

Honest question.

How many of us know people that would be much better off in life getting three hots and a cot for life in exchange for free labor?

Grandpa Levi J. Knight (my 5th great grandpa)
One of the first white settlers in this part of Georgia. Went from killing marauding Creek/Seminole Indians in this area in the 1830s-40s to leading some of his same Ga militia in the War of Northern Aggression.

Ive been to the graves of Grandpa Knight, his parents, his daughter, his granddaughter, his great granddaughter (she died when I was a toddler/she was my great grandma), and then my grandmother.

There were several of his brothers, sons, and son in laws that fought the Creeks as they were travelling thru here heading into Florida. Some of those guys went on to join the Confederacy. One or 2 of those were killed in battles.

I have a very connected family history here in southern Georgia.

Here's an article printed in a Yankee newspaper written by Grandpa Knight after one indian skirmish about 30 miles north of where I currently live. This letter was written to the Georgia governor.

Its a bit hard to read but it can be made out if you zoom in.

Probably.....but Grandpa and 'dem didn't mind shooting a fleeing Creek squaw in the back with #4 buckshot.

Also says they left 'em laying where they fell for the buzzards and other wild critters.

Seems Grandpa didnt have much use for those Indians.

I bet they treated them Yanks the same way about 15 years later...

During my GW years, I stumbled across two seperate old log cabins grown over by the woods that had wooden shutters that when shut had gun ports cut into them. Must have been a bit rough back then for the early settlers.

Got pics of them somewhere in all the pics I have.

The 32nd Alabama Infantry fought from Chickamauga to Nashville. They were the unit atop Missionary Ridge when Sherman broke out of Chattanooga. My ggg grandfather Cpl Malcom McLeod was lost in that battle, his brother Cpt Daniel McLeod was there and lost a son and son in law in addition to his brother. Matter of fact because the regiment was raised by county each company was more or less made up of kinsmen and cousins. Missionary Ridge left alot of widows in Clarke county, Alabama. They were consolidated with the 58th Alabama Infantry for the remainder of the war and finally mustered out at Spanish Fort on the Eastern Shore on Mobile Bay.

BTW, I recently learned that landmines were used by the confederacy in the battles at Spanish Fort and Blakely. They were 12 pounder shells equipped with a pressure detonator. Only known from there and Savannah. Shame they weren't developed earlier.
