I planted 10 roots last spring the plants are about 3 feet tall. They seemed to do well and I would think they settled in pretty good. So. do you want to water them well before freeze up and do I cut them down to ground level etc.??
An veteran asparagus growers instruction would be appreciated. Thanks

We cut ours off in the late fall after it turns brown and burn the plants. I've heard that the asparagus plants are hollow and the asparagus beetles will winter there.
57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

I trap a field that is about 300 acres or so for a commercial grower. It’s all asparagus. They mow it late fall, just before trapping season starts.
Great spot for red fox by the way.
Stop over cooking your meat! It isn’t gamey, it’s over cooked!
Gordon Ramsey, maybe…

Thanks and will do what is recommended from all of you. I think I'll water them well before freeze up also.

I cut mine in the fall after it's all brown, and mulch it pretty deep with straw. Same thing here.
My wife says my housekeeping style is best described as, "There appears to have been a struggle."

Grandma did that too ADC. Bugs? Cellar floor drains went there also. Best patch I ever saw. I miss it and should go get some more.

Cut in late fall and mulch heavy with leaves. Heavy mulching can help you stay ahead of weed problems. I do the same and add compost/maure between leaf mulchings

Watering it would be a plus. Even though the tops will die out before long the roots will still grow. The roots are the important part of plant as far as coming back in the spring. Cuttings the tops off once they turn brown is a good idea to keep them from blowing around and damaging the crown.
