Sad news for all of us here today and for the field of wildlife science in general.
Our dear friend Jack Whitman....Gulo......passed away yesterday, October 3, 2025... at his home in Tendoy, ID. His wife, Miss Lisa was by his side.

Jack has been battling a disease with no cure and no treatment for the past 2-3 years. Multiple System Atrophy it is called. Very rare ...just as Jack was.

So the next time you are out in the woods whether trapping, hunting, or fishing, pay even closer attention to the minute details of nature around you. Learn something new or new to you. It was what Jack tried to do every day.
And lift a toast to a good man gone.

Jack was born in McCall Idaho in 1955.

Rest easy Jack.

Never met him but I did enjoy reading his posts. Jack knew his time was getting short and took the time to say goodbye to all of his Trapperman family. He had class.

Rest in peace, you were a great person. I met Jack in 1996 at Whitefish Lake in AK, on a journey floating the Hoholitna river for moose, caribou and black bear. He wanted to hear about our trip when we returned and that started a friendship. Our trapping community was graced by Jack; we were very fortunate.

Special condolences to Jack's family and friends, including you Ken. Over the years I've gathered from your posts and Jack's posts that the two of you were pretty good friends.

We all lost a little yesterday.

I'm glad Jack was thoughtful enough to give the Tman family the opportunity to say goodbye.

Rest in peace Jack. It was a pleasure to meet and get to talk to Jack over the years. Great advice about taking a minute to stop and learn something about wildlife or nature next time we're out. Jack would like that.

Sad news for sure! Definitely one of the guys on Trapperman that I’d think about while I trap and hunt.

I loved his posts on here. He struck me as extremely knowledgeable and a remarkably humble man.

And lest we not forget, one heck of a poet and mixer of words. He will be greatly missed.

Sad indeed. A virtual library left with him, but grateful for the enormous amount of information he was able to convey to just about anybody that asked will be with us, still.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him but he lived the life that most of us dream of. His stories, pictures and travels were amazing. Rest easy Jack.

Mr. Jack was someone who lived a amazing life we could all be envious of and over the years he has shared with us his love of wildlife and the outdoors and his
scientific research which benefitted some truly magnificent creatures. Several years ago l purchased some on his knives for friends then bought some for myself.
My prayers to his family and friends and thank you for sharing such a treasure with us all.

He gave me some good advice on Owl nest boxes, sad to hear he’s gone.

I got a knife from him once that was on an auction here with a beaver tail sheath. Well crafted much like the full life he shared here with his posts. RIP sir

I have been lucky to trap 3 of the places Jack spent a lot of time in Alaska. We shared memories of the same place and he flat out made me a better trapper. He gave me exact knowledge of how to trap wolves in Alaska. Down to the finest of details like Jack could tell. I spent the night in the treestand last week while bear hunting and a huge owl kept me up all night HOOTING at the top of his lungs in a nearby tree. Thanks Jack.

Rest in Peace, Jack. I only seen him once in person, but really enjoyed his writing, both here and his books. While I've never visited the areas he did in Alaska and Asia, I've hunted and/or trapped many of the areas he did here in Idaho, particularly the northern half. It always adds an extra element to a story when you think, "hey, I know that crick crossing! I've been in that blowdown and tag alder brushhole! It's as nasty as he says, he isn't exaggerating!" You'll be missed Jack, but thanks for passing on a wealth of knowledge while you were here.

Terrible loss of a good friend. I knew Jack for many, many years. As Area Biologist in AK (McGrath and Sitka) and Non-Game Biologist here in Fairbanks for Region III. Trapped, hunted and cut wood with him.

Trappers have lost a knowledgeable friend and supporter. Truly "one of us...," but BETTER! And the world of wildlife science has lost an incredible inquiring mind. His work in Asia and Alaska was unparalleled.

On the bright side, Jack has broken free of the terrible medical situation that was so unfairly placed on his shoulders.

As said by someone already, "Well that sucks".
Hard to argue against that sentiment, but now our work is cut out for most if not all of us to honor the man by being more like him even if it is only a little bit here and there.
Allow what he did and said that inspired you to rub off on you and sink in. We will all be better people for it.

We all meet people who make a indelible mark on our all our lives, and jack was one of those for me. His enthusiasm for knowledge and spice for life was remarkable to see and experience, and his ability to share that with others was a real gift.

Horrible news.

He was a good one.

I recall in the winter of 1991 some folks found an owl in serious distress laying in the road. They threw a coat over it and took it to Jack. He determined that it was starving. Jack kept it in his basement and fed it voles until it recovered. He released it back into the wild and it took off in fine shape.

I was so afraid of this when I saw his last post. Goodbye, Jack, and may you rest in peace .
