Never been good at getting them in footholds. Like snaring, easier to have success for me.

I'm particularly fond of #3 long springs. I've had good luck with Violator 7.

I chop out a bed the same shape as the trap but just a tad bigger, put the trap in the hole, pull my springs in to kinda wedge it in place, and pack dirt around the outside of the jaws to get her stable and solid. In the winter I'm pretty much just setting them on top of the hard ground and conceal with snow. I use them in trail sets more than lured sets in the winter though.

I have caught them in Northwoods, Victor and Duke #2's. Plus a few in Bridger #3's. But I probably have taken more in snares. I just have better luck using cable then steel for some reason.

…. I’ve run the 2 dogless for a few years now … had a few pad caught pull out in front of me so 4 coiled … still have one or two popped jaws a year … too lazy to bubble them … but I’ve found no practical reason to lam as my pan tension keeps most grays out and they’re few and far between anymore

Any set here could have a gray, red, yote, or possum in it. I think the grays are decreasing here also. When i was after foxes i used mb 450 offsets and duke 1/2 rubber jawz. As the yotes have increased i hardly set the smaller traps anymore

I like to trap mink, but theys been in the toilet for as long as I can remember. I used to be an expert as excluding coon to the point I hardly caught anything. It’s amazing what will stick there nose in an empty pocket with no lure or bait within 3 zip codes

I set what I had during a summer contract and of three traps,MB450,Victor Montgomery #2 dogless offsets, and 1 3/4 Victor professional…the Vic/ Monty was my favorite for just coyotes…I felt the MB 450 was a hair small but did hold them and was the overall best multi species trap for the array of nesting predators I was after.the Victor 175 professional held everything and is a great coyote trap, hard on some of the other species though and for just coyotes would run a close second to the victor/ Montgomery. If I was after only coyotes I would not run anything smaller than a #2. I’m trying out MB 550 close jaws in the next season.

I also have #3 Victor Soft Catch I have used for years and set up same as my 1-3/4 Victors but have real #3 coil springs on them. Work great! As long as you cover the wider rubber jaws correctly to keep them to fire up from frosty froze cover.

It could be like guiding yankees for gar fishing---instead its just running yankees thru the pine woods and setting traps. You may want to increase the beer fee for putting up with us though

I have MB 550s but I was unable to use them last season because the public land I had permission for would only allow DPs and cage traps on land, and I wasn't able to secure any private land permissions. Hopefully I'll finally get a chance to use them this season.

No, Live Market here.. it is illegal in this state. No transfer from state to state. Rubber jaw traps where the only legal trap you could set on top of the ground here. Had to use rubber jaw traps. If not rubber Jaw then the trap had to be set 12" deep inside within a hole or in the water. However the law has been changed so a trapper does not have to set rubber jaw traps anymore. I have no problem using them plus, it gives the land owner a piece of mind and some confidence when I will fire on off on my hand and pull the chain. Always some free roaming dogs around.

I like big traps as my main target is coyote/bobcat. I use mostly NoBS extreme and NoBS jrs wire levers. I also very much like the Duke 650.

Favorite lure is Gusto, but also had success with Violator 7, James Lucero (sp?) winter wolf and Mr EJ Kelly sent me a jar last year of ‘leg lifter’ that is showing a lot of promise on remakes.

Well, that is what we had to use back then.. Back in the 1980's Butera and Victor was manufacturing the rubber jaw trap. An old timer trapper that attended the Tennessee wild sources meetings in Nashville told me the the old man Butera attended that meeting and told him " You will be able to use that rubber jaw trap next year". The old trapper replied "How do you know?... Butera Replied to him ..."Because I donated enough money to make sure you'll be able to use that trap".. That is what he told me.. Honest man!

No, Had a whole lot of back and fourth with coon and fox hunters that had clout and political contacts on there side. Not trying to outlaw trapping, Just trying to make it very hard for us. The legal trap now on top of the ground is 7" jaw spread , I believe it's a 1/8" jaw lamination. What I remember being told was when the law was being voted on to allow the use of the rubber jaw trap one of the coon hunters stood up and said " there is not enough coon hunters here attending this meeting to vote on this!" Well, one of the trappers replied" they had every chance to be here just like us!"....Voted.. Legal to set the number 1-1/2 and #3 coil spring rubber jaw trap in the open on top of the ground with written permission from the land owner.

Years ago I had a sorrel gelding that was pretty green and had a big motor. We were at a practice roping and me and a buddy was ready to rope but everyone one else was still warming up their horses or saddling up. I'd only heeled of this colt but my buddy talked me into heading one for him while everyone was getting ready to rope. So I backed into the heading box and nodded for the steer. Well when that colt saw the steer come out of the chute on the wrong side he went left instead of straight. I got him gathered up and pointed the right direction and since this gelding could run and we were in a big arena I figured we were still in the game just aways behind. My buddy said he could here us coming and was in position to do his part. Me and old sorrelly was lined out and running like we just robbed Wells Fargo and just as I leaned out there to rope the steer I felt him break in two. I was leaned out there too far to have any chance of recovery at that speed so I just hit the eject button and started flapping my arms like wings. Buddy said he saw me coming out the corner of his eye but didnt know why I wasn't on my horse anymore. I went flying like a lawn dart at a fourth of July picnic. Never flew so far so fast in my life. That horse ended up being the best team roping horse I ever had and I won a bunch of money off him but he was rank there at the beginning.

This summer I was riding a knot head roan that was spooky as all get out. He was feeling fresh one morning so I was letting him air out a bit in a half section pasture. About our third circle two hen turkeys flew up out of boot high grass ten foot in front of him. He was pretty broncy and it got real western for a bit but to my surprised i was still up on the hurricane deck when the storm past. He still gets a little jiggy whenever we cross that corner of the pasture to this day.

Used to use Victoria #3’s. Bought 10 dozen Duke 650 pro’s and am liking them. Big strong traps. Held a small black bear in one. That was fun had my wife with me. I’m a bait guy, we don’t have a big ant problem most of the year. I like Kaatz bro’s red label and Powder River paste bait. Either a T-bone set or dirt hole with a little sheep wool.

MB 650s inside/outside laminated. Beaver for bait with a few adds, and bobcat urine.I alternate with a few commercial baits from Dunlap/Gomez, Craven, Dobbin, Jack Hill, ...
I have a few 3N LS I like in the snow. Cable restraints also.

My most favorite best way to pile up coyotes is wait till their fur has little value and target cats. Spend several days making time consuming cat sets. Lots of flagging, lots of blocking, all the stuff that don't work on singing dogs. Stay tight in heavy cover, leave traps exposed, climb tall ridges to rimrock, wade creeks to get to the high bank, belly crawl into mesquite thickets or cedar wind breaks. The possums coons porky pines skunks and coyotes will absolutely have gang fights over who can get in your trap first.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Our laws limit us on trap size and we have more fox than coyotes so, I mostly set 1.75s and 2s.

I don't use much lure while land trapping so usually buy some Powder River and Hiawatha Valley. Trying to save a few bucks, I've ground beaver and muskrat meat and mixed it in with the above baits.

One thing I've learned over the years, it doesn't seem to matter what's in the hole during the dead of winter, the coyotes will eventually investigate it. The most important thing is keeping the trap operating.

Talk about operating! I had to see my urologist yesterday for an every other year check-up due to having bladder cancer years ago. Next thing ya know, he's got his big, fat finger right in the hole. Felt violated to the 7th degree!

No need to bubble weld the jaws if you laminate them.I run alot of bridger 2's also

I use offset MB-450’s because we don’t have many yotes. I like using cable, so I’m sure that’s how I’d catch one.

Favorite lure is whatever is in the hole. I use a lot of Hoosier Trappers Leatherwood Creek. Also, been know to dabble with some lure I can’t remember. Dibbens, dabbins… something like that.

My 2 bridgers are at about 25 years old at least. No base plate. Just a rectangle shaped clovis made of round stock and welded together.

I like it when the topic on here actually comes around to trapping. MB550 offset. Luceros, Derricks, O Gormans, Dobbins, Carmens, Jameson's lures. (Don't you talk about me having to pick one lure now!) Which I choose depends on when and where.

If you try to pin me down on lures I'll tell you that I catch the most on Zoom trick worms and Gary Yamamoto doubletail grubs. But I gotta have rods rigged with a Pop R, a Pointer 78, a buzzbait, and ------. Because you just get that feeling sometimes you need to throw "this" at em.

Speaking of coyotes, I used to catch quite a few of them in Duke 1.5's, actually set them for coyotes, or whatever else came by first. Then I found Trapperman and quickly learned it can not be done, so I quit doing that nonsense. I used whatever lure Ludy Sheda threw in on whatever I was buying, lol. Of course that's only been 35-36 years ago now...

…. I can’t blame that on the little trap … but it was western nonetheless

My biggest coyote to date was in a Victor 1.5 coil. It was in a dirt hole for coon with a homemade bacon bait. I was honeymooning with my new bride. We drove around the corner and she says "I thought you said that you can't hold a coyote in a 1.5". I didn't even get out of the pickup before I dispatched it, but when I got up to it it was held well, behind the pad. Judging by the catch circle he'd been there quite a while too.

Only trap that I've had a coyote disassemble was a stock duke 1.5. But in the traps defense it was held good until those greaser lawn guys showed up and spooked it.

I caught a wolf in an old worn out Blake and Lamb 1 1/2 coil, had that big paw dead center. But this was in a water set with a 25’ slide cable. I caught my first two coyotes in 450 helfrich eliminators.

Ludy Sheda ... there is a name I have not heard in awhile, what a character. I once left a state trapping convention with a pickup load of stuff I didnt really need, but I got it for little of nothing! LOL You just needed to find that one item at the convention he was looking to get rid of. Once you bought that item you had the Golden Ticket. Everything else was dirt cheap in our experience.

Mostly #2 and #3 coils, all modified unless they were built that way with a base plate and laminated jaws. Montgomery, Northwoods, Bridgers and lately a few MN Trapline traps. Deception and Cat Creek by Fur Country Lures
