^^^^^ I can guarantee it is blue, and essentially of no or little value. If you blow into the fur, and you can see the guard hairs visible all the way down to the skin it is unprime. If the guard hairs more or less disappear once they enter the underfur, then it is prime.

Just because the leather side Is blue or a slate color doesn't mean the fur isn't prime. There is that short window in late Oct where the fur will be prime, but you will still have blue leather. One other thing is that sometimes size and color will outweigh primness. But with this down market I'm not sure if that would be the case.
The reason for blue leather is that there is still blood where the hair follicles are growing. Well, that was what I was told.
Nice coon. Just remember the consumer doesn't know prime from squat. But the fur buyer is going to use every trick in the book to down grade that hide. Go and catch some more.

The leather side looks good, till it's dry, then it takes on a slate blue color, prime hides will be white, ish.... In the beginning I wondered what a blue pelt was too, then I put them up and found out why they're called blue, lol Thanks!

Hey Hunter. No doubt that coon is not prime just yet from a fur market standpoint. By end of October in a good market most would be worth keeping and in pretty good primeness by mid November but we haven’t seen a good market in quite awhile. However there’s no shortage of them so if you are having fun or getting rid of some nuisance ones around your place keep at it. Only critter that might be bigger nuisance at least in southern part of state than a coon would be a whitetail. Overall we don’t have a high % of great/desirable coon here for the fur market and currently even if that coon was at max primeness you’ll be hard pressed to get more than couple bucks for it.
If you have a chance try to save a few from October, November and December to compare to each other. You’ll be able to observe how the leather will switch from blue to slate gray to tan and then to nearly white as they prime. And you’ll notice the guard hairs particularly on the hip flanks increase in length and fullness as season progresses Thanks BBB!
