For those young enough to still have kids at home....tell me about your reading program for your kids. Around here, I have them read at least 1/2 hour every day, at the start of the day, but of course they're welcome to read more. One big rule is no screens until after reading. Screen time before reading means an hour of reading instead of 1/2 an hour. I have plenty of books for them to choose from, and they visit the library on a pretty-much daily basis, too. I try to encourage them to switch between fiction and non-fiction, but I'm not too strict about it. I don't usually assign books, unless they decide to declare that "there's nothing to read". They all like to jump around in subjects, except my youngest, she tends to get started on a subject, and goes down a rabbit hole. She's currently on a young earth creationism vs science kick, reading one of mine on the subject, with a few from the library in queue.

Every day after reading, they have to come discuss with me what they read, and their thoughts and questions on it. Sometimes it's pretty silly, sometimes it's pretty serious. But, for me, the discussion of the reading is as big a part of their educating as the reading itself.

To answer your question loosegoose, my kids read a lot of Christian literature that is written for their various ages. My oldest reads a lot of both fiction and non-fiction outdoor related books. Lately he's been reading some Elmer Keith books because of the hunting stories that he enjoys. Fur-Fish-Game is big in our house, the older kids read and the little ones like the pictures.

If you're talking Peter Capstick, that's some literature that I need to get for my kids. I was fascinated with his writing as a youngster.

30 + years ago, the plan started as reading every night before bed. Wife and I read to the kids and gradually evolved into them reading to us. As time went by, I discouraged reading huge legnthy novels. Instead, gave them topics and had them find related information and read that to me - Very similar to what my mother did for me as a kid, often reading from encylopidias.

Now, they have a similar skill set that I've utilized my entire career of scanning spec sheets, engineering reports, and a general sense of finding information very quickly. To some, may think that its pumping them full of useless information. Reality is they have a keen sense of finding information
