If you are a caller, how long do you wait after you are in the stand before calling?

I hurt mostly on the ground so when I get to a spot I like I first kick the leaves away from where I will be kneeling.
Next I like to make a few soft deep grunts, then I'll use a stick I carry in my backpack and rub a sapling near me and add in some ground noise. I'll finish up that with a few more soft grunts.
If I have no reaction to that within 45 minutes or so, I move 50-100 yards and do it again.
In another week or so I'll eliminate the tree rubbing and make it sound like a buck is tending a doe, with ground sounds included.

If you have does with early dropped fawns the doe estrous call can be deadly now

I called and rattled a few times, to try it out! Most of the time nothing happens, but sometimes they come right to the edge of the woods and lock up to see what is making the noise.

Usually only call if one I want to shoot is out of range.
Or to.stop.one for a shot.
Have tried the occasional.grunt if things are dead last few years.

Best luck here is 2nd week of November, 10-14 peak.
Had a buck across a small creek one year Nov 7.

I grunted. Nothing. Grunted. Nothing. Grunted harder. He stopped.
Glanced my way, then kept going.
One week later, same scenario.
When I.grunted he stopped and stared, long and hard.
Soon as he started walking I.grunted again.
Jumped a fence, down the bank, across the creek, and pulled up.within a YARD of the tree I.was in.
Had to.lean.way out to clear stand and just sighted down arrow

Almost all.my.best archery bucks have been Nov 10 or 11.

The type of call you use makes a big difference in the sound you can get out of it
I have an original Tru Talker, it's tube feels just like a deers windpipe
Those plastic tubed ones are junk in my opinion, they can't product a quality sound
If you've ever heard a buck tending a doe that's the exact sounds you want to duplicate

I use a estrus can call starting around Halloween. I get to my stand at least 45 minutes before first light, tip the can about 30 minutes after good shooting light. The can is very effective during the chase phase.

I call all season long when I'm bored on stand not aggressive but just deer sounds, bleats and soft grunts not often not real long but it doesn't seem to hurt anything and maybe it helps. I think of it like squirrel hunting in the sense that it lets the animal know another one is around and feels safe so come out and eat.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

I think a call is a good tool to have in the bag but its not a big part in the scheme of killing deer. What sex, age group and time of year all have an influence on how effective and what approach you take to calling in my opinion. I dont do a lot of blind calling. I do think it can have as good of a chance to have a negative effect as it can a positive. Not saying it cant work sometimes because I've definitely called in deer but I've also seen it move deer away from me.

What is your target deer? Does for the freezer or population management, any antlered deer, mature buck??? How much hunting pressure do your deer get and what's your deer density where you hunt? For me all these would would be a consideration when it comes to my calling strategy.

I've had deer come in frequently when using a rabbit in distress call to call coyotes. Cattle also come in to the same call.

You can blow into the bottom hole instead of turning it over. It's easier to control the time length of the bleat this way.

During rut, if you find a mature buck that is in between does and on the look, those can calls will bring them in like they are on a string. Wont be out there without one during that time of year.

The thing is calls only work a small percentage of the time. I'd rather have the element of surprise on my side and not call and be set up in the right spot. . I've have had them work and had success too, but when they come looking, it's easier to get busted too. In thicker cover, I'm willing to bet many of us that blind called deer have had them circle down wind first as they do and busted us and we never even saw them. Calls are good tools, but gotta be used sparingly on my opinion.

That's what they typically do, so setup accordingly
