What would you recommend for a inside wood stove/furnace ive had a outside one for 25 years and it's time for a new one but there pretty expensive.ive got a 1500 sq ft house built new 18 years ago.looking for something that I can get long burn times out of.

We have a charmaster, i think they are built in Minnesota. Forced air furnace. Ben a real good heater. I think we’ve had it 8-9 years.

I like my quadrafire , it doesn;t do overly long burn times but a newer house with good insulation it should warm it up quick and hold heat for a good while after the fire has died down.

burn time is often a component of a larger fire box

the smaller fire boxes can burn less wood and get really good heat from it but need a little more frequent loading if you need to keep it going

these burn very clean and without need of a catalytic converter that wears out, like wonder why you bother cleaning the chimney every year clean , you do because inspection is good but , it hardly needs it

I like my Quadra-Fires. I heat with one at home and one at camp. Both are 3100's Both are older, pre-ACC models.

Like GCP said, they are one of the cleanest-burning non-cat stoves on the market.

I can get twelve hours out of mine if I'm throttle back pretty hard, eight hours at normal burn.

I had to go look at my model I have the older 3100 ACT step top with the queen and legs

it was a floor model I got for half off as it was used some.

I can get 8 hours sleep and have good coals that easily start a fire again , I tend to get about 6 hours good heat , but I also probably need to replace my door gasket this year , it's been a few years.

I have a Quadra Fire 2100 ACC That works great heating my 1400 sq.ft. house.

I have a heat and glow Northstar. No complaints other than I have problems keeping the glass clean. I have a stave mill near me so I can buy their cutoffs which is White oak with no bark on it. I can burn a week's worth of wood and not have to clean out ashes. I'm looking at buying a used jotul 500 V3 Oslo right now for our farm. I know white 17 has some experience with those. Anyone else?

The ash with damp newsprint is the bees knees for cleaning the glass.

I know that trick. I wish it was that easy. I have to use a razor blade to scrape it off. Dealer says I'm not burning season wood. But I have a moisture tester and don't burn anything unless it's under 12%. I question whether it was installed correctly? I don't know the problem. Have a good seal on the doors and a good draft. If I burn it 100% open it will stay hot enough not to build up on the glass. Anything less than 90% wide open turns the glass black.

No experience with the Jotul.

I've got one from Menard's when I built the house 10 years ago, it's made in Canada, been really good, it's in the basement house will get too hot, will burn for 12 hours once you have a bed of coals with hard maplepaid like 700 hundred for it seen them the other day for 1300,

I would replace the outdoor unit. Expensive yes but no fire risk in the house, no dirt, ash, bugs, or packing wood into the house. No smelling like smoke all day. Not splitting or cuting wood small enough to fit and shorter burn times.

If that's not possible due to cost I loved my Vermont castings Dutch west large. It could Handel 22" length wood and had an cast iron grate in the bottom with nice size ash pan under it making cleaning g it out easier. Just slide the fire place shovel back and forth and the ashes fall through instead ot trying to push hot coals back and dig out the ashes. I will have an indoor unit if I build a new house as a back up but won't use it except in emergencys.

I would not buy one without an ash pan or cook surface on top. Infact I have been thinking more about geting one of the Amish built old fashioned wood fired cook stoves with oven and hot water storage tank. instead of a pretty traditional wood stove for emergency use.

Yours having the ACC/ACT and mine pre-dating those government mandates is probably why I can get longer burns out of mine. ACC/ACT limits how much you can throttle back a stove. When the stove temp cools to a certain point more air/draft is automatically introduced into the firebox causing a hotter/cleaner burn. Even when you have it fully damped.

Both mine are completely manual drafts. Where I set it is where it stays.

On cold winter nights I'll put some fresh logs on a bed of coals about 10:00 and burn it wide open for 30-40 minutes until they are going good. Then I'll throttle way back for overnight. About 4:30 I'll open the draft back up so it's warm later in the morning when the family gets up.

The trick is timing it so I have a bed of coals and it's ready for a feeding about 10:PM.

I'm sure all that heat with wood are familiar with that struggle.

They are kind of hard to find but I just put a Naden top loader in our new building build in Canada. They are not much to look at but have a crazy long burn time. They load and vent from the top so easy to damper down and hold a crazy amount of wood. We have another Naden in our house at home and a smaller one in Canada cabin so 3 all together. Flat top makes them easy to cook on or warm stews and soups. I have a cast iron skillet that fits in loader hole for frying steaks etc.

I have had a Hitzer stove since I built our home in the early 90's. It has been a work horse for us. Burn it hard in the winter, as far as burn time it does as good as any and has a good size burn box. Heavy duty and well built by the Amish.

My buddy found this Napoleon model1900 for me on facebook. Never heard of them before, but it's awesome. I paid $100 for the stove. It needed new fire bricks and baffles which cost $200. Got $300 total in it. It's in the basement with an open stair well to the right. It was supposed to be for supplementary heat, but it does so well my heat pump is the back up now. It heats the basement and upstairs, so about 2,200 sq. ft.

are you measuring that on a fresh split along the grain.

if your exterior is 12% your interior can be 20%

has your wood spent 6 months split and under a roof?


bring your wood in let it set in the house as long as you normally wood before burning it , then take it outside split the peice in half and use you meter probes along the grain not across it I bet it reads higher than the end where you checked it
