A buddy of mine recently found this rock on a hunting trip. It's got a hole in it that I suppose is a bit over an inch in diameter and maybe 2 inches or so deep. The diameter of the hole stays the same about half the depth, then swells a bit larger after that. The edge of the hole seems pretty sharp for it to be caused by water erosion, but I don't know. It seems to fit the hand rather well, but I don't know if it was intentionally worked to shape in spots or not. Any educated guesses would be greatly appreciated. [Linked Image]

Water did not wallow out that big hole. Definitely an artifact.

The pinhole on the other side made me think Omar, but the depth, shape, and square edges of the big hole made me question it. I agree with TC1 that it's a cool rock, even if some Ojibwe never touched it. I definitely would have packed it out. Thank you folks for your thoughts on the matter.

Those rocks come from the formations on the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay and have been moved by many a glacier.
The holes are where the calcites dissolved...some are used for fire started hole rubbing stones...friction on and tinder...flames go

I think that rock had some useful natural features, that !ed a Native American to pick it up and use it as a tool. It appears to have both pecked and polished areas, showing modification, as well as natural areas.

Definitely Omar. I found quite a few in the gravel pit. Each one has the look like it was manipulated to its current shape. Most resemble 1/2 the medicine mans Mortar/ Pestle

Its only about 2 inches deep, so that makes sense. I'll bring it back to him.

It’s an Omar, could the Indians have used it? Maybe,, but it’s a natural stone.
I have absolutely no idea how many I’ve found throughout the years hunting artifacts.

Looks like that would made a dandy way to hold the top of the drill while turning with the bow. Be great at camp but wouldn't want to carry it around unless my squaw was doing the packing.
