Is there a ready market for coon meat for human consumption?

Lots of guys have found and developed a market for it over the years. All of them I know of had to find a way to ship to the southern U.S, as that is where the actual market is.

With sanitary gutting, bagging, freezing, and refrigerated shipping to an established buyer you might make some money. I'm thinking ten dollars a coon.

I don't think it's a very big market, so you might not get much help from anyone already established in it. But if you look hard enough you may be able to develop something. I hope you can make it work!

I had a market when the fur was worth selling. Got $7 across the board. Bagged with a back foot sticking out that served both for identification and a handle when frozen. I developed the market on the job site. Middle aged and older black men were masons, before the boarders opened wide, and they were the target consumer.

I was selling over 800 coon a year. I was getting $10.00 per coon. It cost me $500.00 to ship them + expenses.
I was making money then they wanted more coon and wanted them sooner. I gave my contacts to another trapper.

It may not be legal in some states if the coon is a game animal.

Coon a “game animal”. Is this a generic internet police comment, or can you provide some states that recognize such?

I used to sell them locally to a guy who would buy ALL of them. He started buying them at $20 per. They were skinned, de-glanded, gutted, and tail, head, and all but one foot removed. I did about 200 that way one year then went down to $12 and sold 600 one year and about 500 a year for the next few years till I moved. There are markets out there…you just need to find them. This was only 9 years ago.

NC Wildlife regs, page 69, defines a hunting season, bag limit, and gear restrictions for hunting raccoons.
Raccoon is also a fur bearing animal, thus the hides can be sold.
In NC, no part of a game animal may be sold. We cannot sell deer hides or antlers, or wild game birds ( except pen raised). Deer farms are illegal here.
