It used to be this time of the year a trapping magazine had over 100 pages, full of ads and stories because a trapping season was upon us. I got my November/December issue of "The Trappers Post" today and it is damaged as usual because of it's irregular size and it only has 70 pages. Since Noonan stepped aside this publication has gone down hill in my opinion. Its not only Trappers Post, other magazines like Trappers World do not have as many articles as it did a few years ago. The Trapper is not what it was back in the 1980's but it at least was smart enough to go with a regular magazine size and consequently I no longer get damaged issues.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

When they were 100 pages, there was money in fur, hence more advertising to help the magazine grow.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Everyone moved over to utube or doo doo tube to get their trapping info, don't care about tradition/history or any of that boring stuff, just want to know how to catch whatever RIGHT NOW! Watch a couple of video's and start your own ADC business.

Our time came and went nitty, actually surprised any type paper magazine is still around, with or without content!

I would like to see more stories in magazines and not so much political stuff. (Gosh I know I’ll take a beating for that comment)

Agreed. With less political stuff we might drop the desire to fight each other. (I’ll also take a beating).

It ain’t just trapping magazines, it’s all magazines. I remember when outdoor magazines like Outdoor Life , Sports Afield and Field and Stream were fat and packed full of interesting stories and columns. Fine Woodworking, The Journal of Light Construction, The Retriever Journal and others were the same way.

Now they are skinny and packed full of advertisements.

I dropped nearly all of them a long time ago.

Eh...wot?

I'm surprised any trapping magazines still exist with the cost of publishing and mailing the way it is plus print material is going the way of the dodo bird including newspapers and magazines.

Print is dead. Actually, it is almost on life support.

Years ago I used to get a LOT of magazines. Had over 20 subscriptions. Trapping , outdoors , cars , popular mechanics , fishing , cooking , national geographic and even some oddball trade magazines like Amusement Today which is a trade publication for theme parks.

Subscriptions were cheap , about a dollar an issue on average. Fat magazines too.

But everything is moving online. The advertising went with it.

The only magazines I get now is B.A.S.S. , In-Fisherman and my NRA rifleman magazines. Only because I have lifetime subscriptions. They have all gotten thinner.

Magazines are just not as profitable like they used to be.

Most all magazines now are nothing but advertisements, but I still like getting my FFG every month since I was a kid.

I don’t blame you for trying to still live in the 80’s.. but this is 2025.. I’m surprised there’s even a magazine left..

I just pick up F-F-G at my local grocery store every month. my kid reads a few fishing articles and and enjoys charlie and lews adventures. He's just barely getting interested in hunting squirrels and I think he may be barely interested in trapping. he may want ot do walks to check traps but not work to set them. time will tell so i'll always get my FFG. I used to get the backwoodsman. I still might but i'll look for good articles.

I'm going to start to make small binders for each topic out of FFG and others like ones for trapping coon, beaver etc hunting white tails, predators, trout fishing etc. good for reference when our power grid finally collapses.

Yes it is not the same as it was 40 years ago, but as stated above there are many alternatives and also a real down fur industry. I am acually surprised that the magazies are able to get the ads they do get with the revenue declines many fur and trapping related buisinesses must be going through.

Best way to support print is to continue to subscribe. People need to think about the content they consume. If it’s free, you are not the consumer but the one being consumed. Food for thought.

What more can be written? Like deer hunting magazines, the same information gets regurgitated over and over through the years. Adds and new gadgets are put on the pages is about all that's new.
