I was in the process of placing an order to Mr Lucero and how much to order. I figure I have 10-15 years left in my trapping adventures and wonder how long the lures will keep if stored in a cool/dry place.

I came across the thread discussing successors. This got me to thinking about my general exposure if other of my favorites were no longer available.

I have lures made by several newer makers that may be great in their own right, but I would hate to lose some of the time proven lures that I have had success with.

Well made lures will keep longer than 15 years if they are kept in a cool dry place.

Order arrived. I thought it funny and cool one of the Winter wolf still has his old label from Kansas on it. I think this should do me till I quit.

Well-made lures can last 50 years or more. Asa Lenon told me a story where the local sporting good owner found a case of Super All Call from generations back in the ownership of the store in storage. The lure was rehydrated with water / glycerin and trappers had good success with it. It is a small world as my daughter married the son of the sporting goods store owner many years later.

I think a lot of the lures we buly have been stored in places for a long time already, so I would not get too worried about storing some at home if you have a good place.

I agree John, well formulated lures can last for many years if they remain sealed / hydrated and kept in a reasonably stable temperature environment.

We have and still use some lures formulated in large batches at that time from the early 1980's. I have some prime glands also that we still use from some 1988 prepared batches. You would be hard pressed to find high quality prime glands from that era.

sounds like you're discussing good years foe wine batches. I never thought about glands changing other than due to time of year like breeding season and geting stronge becuse of it.

Has something change over the last 40 years to the animals to make fresh prime time glands lower quality?

Put a batch of fresh prepped glands along side a batch of aged glands, the odor difference is very clear.

Glands are the same however availability can change big time. Years back I put up 40 - 5 Gallon pails of Mink Glands. Mink glands have been hard to find last couple of years, and very expensive but my put up glands remain excellent to this day.
