When I was in Alaska, and we had the cold spell in January 1989, I decided to try my hand at quilting. It was something to occupy myself during the cold when it wasn't pleasant to be outside. Once I got started, I couldn't seem to quit. I gave most of the quilts away, but here are a few that we still have.

This is a log cabin that won third place in the fair at Fairbanks in 1989. It's pretty well worn and faded, because we used it a lot.

This is a spools quilt that's also very well worn. I need to take the ragged border off and redo it.
[Linked Image]

This is an amish pinwheel that I didn't finish. The top is all that's done.

Nice work!...I know of a few men that knit and crochet....my wife offered to teach me but I declined, lol

However I do most of the housework here, Miss Daisy isn't up to most of it anymore...just finished washing the floors, if that counts.... grin

Tried my hand at crochet, my attention span ain't long enough to finish one though. I do love to cook though, just put supper on the stove. Mama saw to it that her three boys knew how to do basic sewing and ironing and feed ourselves. Guess she figured we wouldn't find wives.

The sewing came in handy in the service as the post sew shop was crap at getting uniform alterations right.

I used to crochet. My grandmother taught me when I was young. I'm left handed and she was the only one who had the patience to teach me.

I'm not allowed to do laundry anymore. You turn a couple things pink and suddenly you're banned from even looking at the washing machine. If the wife needs something ironed I'm her go to.

Have you been a Gillette razor guy all this time and never said anything? LOL wink Being a bachelor for my first 40 years before rushing into marriage I enjoyed cooking a lot I like simple foods with natural flavors. Not a spice guy just a basic meat, potatoes and vegetables but quality stuff not just anything on my plate. Simple things are my favorite meals like burger and potatoes, beans and weenies, chicken and wedges simple stuff just the way I like it.

Not big on many cheese choices mozzarella goes on anything that gets cheese or I go without cheese. Cheese sauce is good but I could take it or leave it like cheesy peas or green beans.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Our family falls naturally into gender rolls.

sewing is a basic skill everyone should know how to do. I have never had any issues changing diapers, cooking, washing dishes or any other typically female domestic chores. I can and enjoy helping my wife out. she helps me when I need a hand or often just to spend time together while geting life accomplished.

Can't say I have anything I do on my own that falls in that category, other than enjoying cooking and food preservation. Would possibly change if I had more time.

couple times a year I will bake a pumpkin or apple pie. sometimes I will surprise my wife by doing dishes for her.

I do enjoy sweeping the floors, feels like i'm cleaning up at a jobsite which I also enjoy.

Other thing I like to do is organize, everything in it's place and a place for everything. pretty much gave up on it when I got hitched and had to share a living space. throw kids in the mix and My shop is my safe space lol

I do all the cooking, laundry and some cleaning. Have to admit I'm not the worlds best on cleaning the house. Can and smoke/preserve meats veggies and sweets. Can do rudimentary sewing repairs.

With five boys in our family we all helped mother with cooking, cleaning and other chores. We all cleaned what ever game/fish we got. And as a graduation gift we each got a Betty Crocker cook book and a suitcase! My wife and I can a couple hundred cans of goods, tomatoes, green and yellow beans, pickled beets, apple and pear butter, peaches, jelly. We have fun putting up our garden.

Yea the boys outnumbered the girls significantly in our house and still do. 3 grandsons and no granddaughters yet. A guy will do what a guy has to do ..... especially if your mother tells you to!

Oh I can win this contest by a country mile grin I'm a homeschooling stay at home father. I cook, but I don't clean, I have kids do that. I do parent's laundry, kids do their own.

In all seriousness, though, what we think of today as normal or ideal gender roles now have really only existed since the industrial revolution.

I cook , do some recipe development.

used to give hair cuts and help the daughters color their hair

I was the beer powered yarn winder

I make sewing repairs

It was basically my kitchen the last 25 years , and now there isn't anyone else's kitchen for it to be.

have you really lived till you pull an almost all nighter baking getting the gnash perfect for the cupcakes and frosting a couple hundred for the bake sale not just frosting , piping it on.

I do my part helping the little lady around the house.
Whenever I'm on the couch and she's coming around for a pass with the vacuum cleaner, I always pick up my feet so she can vacuum under them.
On top of that, I always make sure to stomp the mud out of the cleats of my work boots before i pick my feet up.
It's the little things that truly warm a woman's heart,

I was driving a Chevy luv during that time. Remember the ice fog?
Never have seen that since. Tho, didn't live here from 90 to 2012. Don't see that kind of cold anymore.

I do that too. It's all for my wife, and mostly inappropriate, but it makes her laugh.

I like to arrange flowers, bake, and occasionally try on my wife's dresses....but I don't use setters for 330's!

I’m a librarian. It’s a predominantly female profession but that’s the problem there is no male perspective to guide people to more masculine pursuits like trapping. There is no outreach to young adult males. I do it because I love being surrounded by history and knowledge but dang these women can be catty.

I do most of the cooking in our home. Wife hates to cook. I really enjoy it.
I like doing the laundry too. I fold shirts better than she does.
I own a sewing machine and like to sew. When I was in junior high I sewed a paire of pants and a shirt from scratch. Used a pattern and material I bought from the sewing store, this was for a 4-H project for the county fair. I then had to model the clothing in front of a judges and crowd of parents. Me and a whole bunch of girls I was the only guy in the contestants. I won and moved on to the state fair level. Most of my male 4-h counterparts were showing cattle and sheep, not me I was on the runway with a whole bunch of girls and having fun while they all gave me their numbers and admired my sewing handiwork.

Now when the Mrs has a button come off or a tear in her favorite pants she hands it to me and I get out my trustee sewing machine or I hand sew the button back in place.

I also really enjoy clothes shopping with my wife. I love when she tries on clothes and I get to see her excited about a new outfit that she likes. She will often try something on then send me back out to the floor sometimes for a different size in same make/brand and I know right where she got it from. She says I’m better than most of the women who work at the clothing stores. I like working with the sales people too. I get them all into it by having them reserve a dressing room for my wife and holding some pieces for her while we shop the racks so she can try those on when she is ready. Seriously it’s fun to get sent back out for something same brand but different size and I know right which rack it came from. Had several sales women say oh I know where that came from and I’d pipe in with yeah me too it’s such and such brand in their such and such dress or blouse model and color over there. The sales ladies are always so used to just showing the guys where the official guy waiting chair is near the dressing rooms but I refuse to be treated like the dumb guy who doesn’t get clothing and has to sit in the corner. They all seem to get helpful and interested when I jump in and know their jobs better than some of them do.

Anyway, that’s my soft side I don’t often share much. Sorry, Savell. And I do use setters even on my 220s and, gulp, 160s too.
And, in all the many, many, years I’ve been a member on here, Paul has never given me a time out.
There I said it. Now stop judging me.

Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

My kids bought me a pair of crocs as a joke because I was always making fun of theirs. I used to tell them that they put the holes in them so that their dignity had a place to leak out. LOL

Turns out, they make excellent water shoes for when my granddaughter and I are wading the local rivers and fishing.

As a bonus, they float So when they get stuck in the mud and come off, when you finally get them loose, they pop up to the surface.

Eh...wot?

I just wonder how many on here would bid on an original quilt made by Paul Dobbins as a fund raiser, food for thought.

I had a neighbor who was a very skilled surgeon and enjoyed doing fine embroidery. He made and embroidered Christmas stockings for his family. Everyone said a surgeon like him had fine manual dexterity and an eye for detail.

Paul, it occurs to me that fine manual dexterity and an eye for detail probably served you well as a bomb guy in the military - AND kept you warm in style!

My wifes dresses don't fit me I had to buy my own. I do shave my legs with an electric razor though.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Oh my goodness that's funny!

Not bragging, but I lost the hair on my legs when I had my knees replaced.

My wife and girls constantly say they would kill to have my legs.

I only cook inside when I'm forced to.
My wife won't let me clean anything, says I don't clean to her liking and I'm just fine with that.

Got my nails and toe nails done by what I thought was “fake” neon red nail polish…turns out some idiot DIL gave her child the real stuff with no polish remover. Went turkey hunting the next morning and killed a turkey with my “lucky” polish, lol.
