Yes, one way or another I’ll provide a fix! lol
15 years ago is about the time we switched to the better drive unit and the square black powder coated tube. Is the tube on your setter round or square like one in pic?

Rubbing the push rod with steel wool or abrasive pad followed by wiping with dry cloth or paper towel will remove any residue that may have built up on rod. Residue caused thumb release to stick a bit on rod not letting it “re-set” for next stroke.

Also, oiling lightly where indicated on card will keep handle from sticking.

Let me know how you fare with the above.

Thanks much Jayme.

080808, one more thing you can do is turn the push rod left a 1/4 turn or so. That way gripping plates and thumb piece start grabbing new steel on the push rod. It’s one of the improvements on the 2nd gen setter, the push rod rotates 360 so you can always find new meat to grab. Usually not needed for the first several years but if you’ve had your setter for 15 years it might be time. lol

Most rods just rotate on their own with use and transport but some need to be turned by hand the first time just to get the rod loosened up. Usually works best to turn left the first time, after it starts turning freely you can turn left or right.

Trapset. Lubed as suggested and will work on it tomorrow. My wife came home from hip replacement 2 days ago and I’m learning how to cook again. Mine has square tube. Keep you posted. Thanks for everything so far.

Trapset. Sorry about the delay but I’m also the Town Supervisor. Noticed the Phillips head screw that holds what I call the drive plunger was out. Got that back in but rod will not come back at all. When I pull the release handle I noticed the larger spring does not move at all. Lubed with W-40 but still not movement on rod which is now fully extended.

No worries.

Are you talking about the screw at the top of the thumb piece?

It’s the screw that holds the block with the V that forces the trap spring closed . In now but rod refuses to come back . When I put my thumb in the right place to pull rod back the spring doesn’t move.

The spring between thumb piece and frame?

You should be able to depress thumb piece and pull or push rod in or out.

That spring should compress when you squeeze handle. Any way you can post a pic of it?

When you got your setter 15 years ago, the small screw you replaced holding movable jaw in end of push rod had blue loctite on it. On rare occasions that screw would back out usually due to vibration when transporting on 4wheeler or snow machine. We changed the spec to red loctite about 10-12 years ago and it solved the occasional problem.

I’m guessing when that screw came out on your setter, the push rod came out of the drive mechanism. That requires re assembly. It can be kind of tricky but very doable. You can study the pics below and make sure your drive is assembled exactly the same way. Or send me a close up pic and I can look it over. I can get more pics if you need. Note the pin my finger is pointing at, that pin should be behind the bottom of gripping plates in order to advance rod.

Other option, if you send me the setter I’ll replace any worn/missing parts and send it back to you. That said, if you’ve ever had an automatic shotgun apart for cleaning and got it back together, this is easier than that. lol
