I’ almost made a mistake..
During the summer I just poured water into my radiator… ( tightwad) I was watching Dale billingnsy on YouTube and all of a sudden it popped into my head that I never changed over to antifreeze… might not freeze hard enough to freeze in the block tonight.. 28 degrees or so..
But I ain’t taking chances. Draining everything in the dark with the aid of my spotlight.
I know some of you guys aren’t cheap like me and keep antifreeze all the time.. but for you guys like me,,, better get er did

I’m cheap too but never run just water instead of antifreeze even in the warmer months

Keep in mind you can't drain it all out, some will still be in the block, heater core, etc. So if you're pouring in the premixed 50/50 stuff, it won't actually be 50/50. Add a couple quarts of straight antifreeze first.

Not to mention, antifreeze lubricates your water pump. Won't be saving much when that wears out pre-maturely.

Just doing what I want now.

They don't call it antifreeze & coolant for nothing.

It adds a level of boil over protection. Much needed for these newer vehicles that run at higher temperatures.
Water turns to steam at 212°. Many of the newer vehicles have an operating temperature at or near 200°
Don't take long for bad things to happen when running straight water for coolant

Coolant also has corrosion inhibitors that pure water does not.

Next time, don't put straight water in your vehicle. Lol coolant lasts for years, so are you really saving anything that makes a difference.

Propylene glycol is one of the most corrosive fluids in an engine and should be changed every couple of years, at least you should test it.

Well good catch, should be good.
We got down to 22 this A.M.
Got everything checked and topped off.

Only time I run straight water is when flushing out the old chevy 's i got.
Than use 100 percent antifreeze to get it so it's good for -40

Let me sugar coat this

100% isn't actually -40 it is more like -5
the 50/50 is -37f what is typically called -40 on most jugs , weather you buy the ready to use 50/50 mix or mix it from the concentrate , the price is better to mix your own and you can choose your concentration
60/40 is -67 f
65/35 is the max of about -90f
then 70/30 starts going back the other way

the mix needs water to work right

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

GREENCOUNTYPETE is correct. Using straight (100%) antifreeze is worse than a proper mix. Straight (100%) antifreeze will also boil over ( overheat ) at a lower temperature than a proper mix too.
