I’m trying to figure out a tape to use on the joints for that black chimney pipe? I’ve tried some foil tape McMaster and Carr had it didn’t last long, I’ve used silicone in the past but not a fan of it, if it wouldn’t be for having to take it a part I’d weld regular elbows in but I don’t want to have to cut everything a part.

How come you’re looking to seal your joints Bob? Are you getting smoke or creosote coming out?

Eh...wot?

Seems like I’m getting a little smoke especially during start up when the pipe is still cold, also it does seem to run better when they’re sealed.

Did you check to see if the flue is obstructed, might not be drawing right.

Yeah, unless something happened in the last couple weeks it was clear and it was doing this before.

Is your outside pipe above the roof peak? Sounds like you don’t have enough draw. Woodstoves are typically set up so the males are down so any soot or creosote runs into the stove and not out the joints. Coal stoves are opposite so they don’t leak any fumes.

I had some stuff tha came in a call tube that dried hard like ceramic. It worked for a while but broke up and fell off
It was years ago and I dont remember anything else about it. It was when I put my first wood stove in when I always about 19. and thought I would need it. turned out I didn't.
May be work for you but would.ne re done each season.

has it always had this issue? before I redid the stove pipe at my rental house smoke would come in when I opend the wood stove when we got a south wind. It was the way the air moved over the roof. when I re did it I made the stove pipe taller to draft better and it fixed it.

I had a gap in my outdoor boiler chimney cap that the pipes stack on so I just lined the outer rim of the cap with metal tape and that fixed the leak, the temp was climbing higher then in the past when shutting down at peak temp settings.

A silicone tape will work. It is called self sealing silicone tape. It is stretchy, there is no adhesive to worry about and seals/sticks to itself.

Before you start it up, burn some paper to warm up the flu so it starts to draw...you should be good after that unless your pipe is to low and not above your roof line,,,or you have an obstruction.....yes on the males down

The pipe is above the roof, it’s worked for a lot of years I burn cardboard to preheat the stove, I’m really thinking the elbows just suck I replace them every season, 3M returned my email and they recommended a company out of New York I’ll try the self sealing silicone tape might be a good option, the link is the New York company.

I have 20’ flue so I also start every fire with a couple of pages of newspaper lit first to get heated air drawing up. I don’t get the back draw I would sometimes get. Might try that heat hardening fiberglass muffler wrap for persistent leaks.

Is your flue pipe the correct diameter for the stove? Any obstructions within 10 ft of the stack, flue needs to be at least 2 ft above anything within 10 ft of it. Trees will grow on you and get too close.

Yeah Bob it’s an 8 inch on a 7 outlet on a hitzer 82 stove, it’s 3 feet above the almost flat roof in the center of the shop that’s 47 feet wide at the top and 100 feet long that’s why I’m pretty sure it’s not an issue with that aspect of the pipe.

A decent stove company/store will have a sealant specifically for stove pipe. The stuff I have used was black. It comes in a tube, just like caulk. You can apply a bead around the joints, but proper installation is done as you connect the sections. A thin bead on clean pipe should work fine.

Just doing what I want now.
