Have you always had to check in gray fox you trapped for the whole state of Virginia? Or is this something new

I couldn't recall when the change occurred... Per the interweb:

Virginia has required the reporting of harvested gray foxes within 24 hours of kill since at least 2014. This regulation applies to any gray fox legally killed during an open hunting or trapping season, and a confirmation number must be recorded immediately after reporting.

Thanks. I live on the Va/md line and most of my properties I can trap are in md so reviewing the Va regs I found it and since I guess I have passed over it I thought it must have been new, at least for Accomack County

I was hesitant to answer (don’t read this Mr. Swamp…), but it looked new to me as well. Been used to dealing with mainly reds for the last good while. I’m inclined to agree with AB Trapper above instead of what I posted from Google as we used to call in quite a few greys 10 years ago when predator hunting at night and it wasn’t required.

Glad you pointed it out.

When I noticed it I assumed that maybe prior it was a “west of the blue ridge” type thing before

What he said. Probably was in the 2024 regs digest for the first time. Reporting was implemented due to concern about population decline. Reported data, even if not 100% accurate, is better than estimates.

I have quite a few pictures of greys on my trail cams in VA. Have only caught one while coyote trapping before fox season came in and released it. Big, healthy looking male.

My line used to have a bunch of gray fox, multiple catches daily was not uncommon, I don’t think I have caught or seen one in almost 10 years. They are a beautiful critter. Eric
