I have a rat - or maybe rats - in my store room. I have two standard rat snap traps and have tried cheese, peanut butter, and marshmallows with no luck. I have a squirrel tube type trap baited with peanuts, pecans and walnuts. Not a one has been touched. He stole about 20 jalapeño peppers off a plant my wife put out there to keep from freezing. He wont eat jalapeño peppers I give him. There are a variety of other foods he wont touch. I have some one bite poison out, but obviously, that aint working either. Will those sticky traps hold a rat this size?

That looks to be a beast of a rat. It sure has bulked up. Stay away from glue boards for rats. They likely will chew off before you can get them. If you can get to them quickly after stuck you can kill it. We catch most all of our rats commercially with small cage traps set along the walls and squeeze points between objects etc.

A single rat can be one of the most challenging animals to catch at times. Ask me how I know.

I’ve yet to have one of them chew out. They probably try, but they are face planted as soon as they hit the glue with their mug.

I am learning that around my chicken coop. They seem to learn very quickly, and don't like new objects.

I fought a couple of rats in my attic and basement for 2 months.. had one on a glue board and he knawed out of it.. they would not think of going to a rat trap or a cage trap.. were chewing the wires and reaking havoc! You could hear them nawing at night… finally.. the man at the feed store told me to get about 5 cats… and liquid rat poison you mix with water and set it out… the liquid did its job as its odorless and apparently tasteless…

Hubby caught one in a bucket trap for mice.
The small live traps worked for us too but I know what you mean about not being able to catch them, they seem to have a few smarts.

I did get two in one day in weasel boxes baited with fresh muskrat, but then nothing in those after that.

man do i know about trying to catch the last rat took me 3 months it seemed to educate itself seeing the others being caught
i finally cut-out the trap siloette in card board and raised the cardboard so that the trap was flush then covered everything in flour and finally got him
you might want to try a bait called just one bite and heat up some butter to drip onto the poison pellets this has worked for me quite well in the past

Get final..all weather bait blocks.

My son smashes it into pieces...mixes it with some sheep sweet feed...and throws it down the hole near the barn.

Great success

If you pressure them they mess up more trying to escape from the danger unpressured they can maneuver around 110s without setting them off. I had a rat snap trap set for 6 weeks to catch the last one from a few that invaded my coop. I used a piece of a fig bar I knew it was running around because a part of the tail was missing.

I’d arrange boxes with traps in the pinch points to take away their options.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

The problem with poison baits is what do they have access to? To escape and hide, or to retreat to an inaccessable area. Then you will need to deal with decompostion odor.

Exactly. They can be as hard to catch as an adult trap shy beaver when you've caught the rest in the colony.

There was this bar that was so rough they checked you for a gun and if you didn't have one, they gave you one.

Set an unbaited trap along the wall and leave it alone. Preferably some where you can check it without being near it or on your usual travelpath. I can usually catch them in a few days to a week this way.

Absolutely.

And it doesn't help that they are neophobic and are very wary of anything new/different in their established environment.

Eh...wot?
