Not Humptulips, I actually live at the south end of Neilton WA. Used to have a store, couple of churches, a medical clinic and the PO. Down to one church. Population for the area dropped below 300 last census. We still have two fire hydrants, doubt they will be closing. grin
I tell people that we had a library when I was a kid but one day they loaded it on a flatbed truck and hauled it away (true story) so I guess it has been downsizing for a long time.

Sorry to hear that Bruce. They were talking about removing ours too...as it is they reduced the hours down to half of what they were. Our town has about 450 more or less.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

When we moved here, our local Post Office was going to be closed. I paid them $38,640.40 in Express Shipping fees, that year. They became profitable enough they kept them open. Our realtor called and told us I saved the Post Office.

The same thing happened back when I lived in Dayton, when I found a Post Office, that had no wait and started shipping from there instead of the busy one I had been shipping through. It was supposed to close and then stayed open.

If you can get more business going through the Post Office, it will stay open.

Keith

Sound very familiar with small town across the US. The only business booming in small town is the cemeteries.

Yet, my mail comes out of the Hampton PO three and a half miles up the road while my local Sunnyside PO is just over a quarter mile out my front door and the even bigger Griffin PO is only seven miles away with the Experiment PO a mile closer.

Ours closed back in the summer. For decades our mail would arrive around 10 in the morning. Now it's coming from a different town and comes anywhere from 3 to 5 in the afternoon.

I have lived in two towns that did not have a Post Office or city delivery. Had to drive seven miles to the PO every day. Always thought I should be able to take a mileage deduction. Had to pay box rent also.

I use to live in a wide spot in the road. There were about 25 homes. Rural mail service was about 1/2 mile up the road but we could not get it. The post office was only open a few hours a day. I had to take time off work every other week to get my mail. It turns out that the post master had a few friends with businesses in the neighboring town and they would use the post office to do all their mailings, so she could have enough revenue to keep her job.
