Was not going to start snaring some fox until December first to get them when they are fully primed out (for around here). But got the itch so I set 2 snares yesterday at the gravel bank around the corner from my house. Result was these 2 red males this morning. They look good from the fur side (not scratched out from ticks) but the leather side is still blue. Skinned them with the feet on so they should tan up nice for a wall hanger.

When I was a younger man, I worked for Spring Hill mink ranch in southern Ohio.
We started pelting the Friday after Thanksgiving.
That's when the pelts were at their peak.
I , for years, started trapping a week after that, being that Ohio's gun week for white tailed deer, was the following Monday,
That ends up being the first week in December.
Fur is prime by then.

* Pelts taken before that, in my region, were often down graded.

We usually started pelting mink around November 20. Pelting between 25,000 to 40,000 a season we started with adult males and females that were not being kept the following year for breeders. As with many animals (coons are an example most trappers are familiar with) adult males and females (that have not raised a litter the previous spring) will prime up before young of the year. Having to skin so many, with usually only 3 of us skinning, we did some just as they were becoming prime, then most at peak of primeness, then a few past prime. Averaged about 1500 a day. For me pelting season was my favorite time especially as starting at age 8, I got to skip school 2 or 3 days a week to stay home and skin mink. It was an "all hands on deck" time. We always skinned the mink in Nov/December and froze the pelts then fleshed pelts in January. I did not get to skip school in January for fleshing, much to my chagrin.

You can't do any better than hitting a fox for every set.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.
