I'm going to be building a bunch of squirrel boxes for my kids this winter. We've always caught a few red squirrels in weasel boxes with two inch entry holes. I seem to have squirrel refusals fairly often, and wonder if it isn't that the hole is a bit smaller than they would like. I'm debating on cutting them at 2.5 inches, but if I do, we have to check them every day instead of every three days with a two inch hole. We usually check daily anyway, but it's nice having some cushion in case something comes up. Do any of you folks have an opinion on the matter?

Well, what's the bait used in your BOXES for Pine (Red) squirrels ?
And . . .have you tried both pre-baiting and adding visual baits on top of the box and hanging from a branch near by ?
Any type of cheap bird feeder, suet feeder or simply an ear of field corn hanging from a wire will draw in squirrels.
Squirrels are very visual and also hear well, so feeding birds will draw a lot of attention.
Most of all, location is paramount. Do you know what a Midden is or means ?
If not , Google it !!! Then look for these types are areas.

Wherever squirrels have feeding areas in a stand of conifers will be hard to beat.

With Red squirrel I use 110 in their trails. No bait needed. You can find where they are squeezing under or through the brush and just drop the trap in. If your are in good pine stands should be set. I know a person that uses his 220 coon boxes also. Set them opening up fill them with corn and the squirrel work in and out of them. He says the squirrel gets caught leaving the box by jumping up and grabbing a hold of the triggers firing the trap. I would think a smaller box with smaller trap would work better. JMO.

Typically using corn or sunflower seeds for bait. Set locations aren't an issue between bird feeders, chicken coops, rabbit hutches, and a few middens I'm aware of. I'm wondering if increasing the size of the entry hole will increase their willingness to go in the box, or if the overall availability of food where we're setting makes it such that they just don't feel a need to go in there. I do catch plenty in 110s, and the boys will be putting some of those trail sets in, but I think the boxes will be easier for the little girl to use. I may just have to cut a few boxes with bigger holes, and see if it makes enough difference to justify checking every day. Thanks for the info so far guys.
