I’ve looked Ike’s through the archives and seem to be missing it.

Does anyone have a link to the jump trap under ice platform sets?

I've seen it 100X, I'll see if I can locate it... don't hold your breath.

https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthr...der_ice_beaver_conibear.html#Post2319353 - There's a couple pictures on the first or second page. Kilda blocked by photobucket, but you can still see them. Probably more further into the thread. Tons of great under-ice beaver info there.

I don’t think it’s a crazy high percentage set but I have a few #3 jumps I might play around with.

I did it with Victor #4 longsprings. Just wanted to try a baited set underwater. Took me a while and two misses but I finally got one. My problem was three feet of snow and slush on top of the ice. It was a lot of work but something I checked off my trapping bucket list. I covered the hole with one of those old circular snow sleds and covered with snow. It worked real well. Easier to shovel snow than re-chip ice

I did the ones like 330 has in his picture back in 1970s. Works where have deeper water. I probably have pictures in box somewhere taken with my old 110 Kodak. I know I have a picture of me with my hand in one them #4 jumps. Reach in hole slide my hand down pole feel if the spring lever still down. . Except stuck my fingers right on pan. Bang.. luckily my older brother was with and chopped the pole loose from ice.
I even welded lag bolts to piece flat stock. Made up trap rest that I could easily screw into pole or log. Not be looking for sticks nailing them just right with cold hands. Used light wire to hold the trap to the flat stock platform. If I was doing now I probably use light zip tie to hold trap and bait.

I used some #1 and 1 1/2 jumps in open water for muskrats in a similar fashion. I just cut a slot in a dry pole for the spring to stick into. I'd think one of these Oscillating saws would make a perfect slot for a snug fit on the spring, then just wire some food sticks to the pole or even white PVC, and shove it in the bottom under the ice.....

Thanks all.

I’ve got one of those saws Jayme, I’ll give that a go when I’m experimenting. Stuff just froze up good but I think they will hit bait better in a month or so.

After reading through that archive you linked I realized I actually posted on it. Lmao.

At your age, we expect you to be slipping some. lol

Those traps worked too. Water was too deep to walk in in my knee boots. lol Caught several in the edge of a pond the same way.

I used to do the same thing ADC but I used slates for the pole. drilled 2 holes at a small angle for long nails to hold the trap then 1 nail above to hold a half of a ear of corn. The only down fall was I once found one half way up the bank with a mighty ticked off dink beaver in it. Front foot catch.

Good hole covering plan... I always used cardboard, but yours was a better idea

A few decades back an old trapper told me of his method of doing the same with #4 and 14 jumps. He had always used platforms for his under ice trapping. He said he was getting ready to use his last platform he had with him on a set and found it broken. He said it dawned on him that the same slot he cut in smaller stakes for #1 jumps when he was rat trapping might work for a #4. So he cut a slot in his pole and set his #4 in it, baited it up as normal and set it in place. The next trip he had a beaver and after that it was the only method he used. I was getting out of college about then and ended up moving to an area which rarely had under ice trapping conditions. Then in my years in Alaska my job schedule and family health matters precluded any serious trapping so I’ve never had the opportunity to try his method. And this part of Idaho doesn’t offer much in the way of under ice trapping.

I’d be curious if it works as well as he claimed.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

I plan on positioning one of the bait sticks to protect the loose jaw from being flipped up. I think that’s what I’m seeing in the pics. Makes sense to me anyway.

Keep looking in the Archives. It's there, I have seen it and used it to model my bases that the #14 sit's on. I used 1 x 3 pine and pre-made the bases. I do not cut slashes into the main pole like you see above with the rat traps from ADC. I want the trap more solid so I use a base.

The base is a 1 x 3 screwed onto another 1 x 3. Then pre-drill the holes for either nails or screws into the side piece. Screw the top piece onto the side piece. Make these ahead of time.

You do not want all those little branches sticking off your bait like in the picture. Beaver will just grab them and pull them without getting in the trap.

I use 4 pieces of bait sticks. 2 are real wood and the other two are pieces of white PVC pipe pre-cut and holes drilled in them to wire them with the bait sticks. All sticks are 7 inches long I think. I alternate the pvc and real wood. They might be 6 inches long, I don't have one in front of me. You want them short, just covering the width of the trap, no more. You are going for a front left foot catch. Almost every time. They work great. Hardest part is drilling the hole in the ice. Bring your poles and you have everything you need in your sled.

They used rubber bands to hold the traps onto the bases plates. I don't like messing with rubber bands in the severe cold. I use 16 g. wire with a light wrap, so they can pull it off easily. The light colored pine is drawing them close as well. It is bright underwater. That is why I use the PVC, to brighten it up under the ice and show them the bait. The loose jaw is not an issue.

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

I’m sure you’re right Super Wide. After reading ADCs link I thought that was it. But it seems the one I’m thinking of had more info on the jump set. Something about the spring mounted in a way that drove the trap up to grab the front foot. I could be remembering it wrong, I’ll keep looking.

Back when I used that set like the middle picture. The bait sticks are about an inch in diameter and no more than 10” in length. Pay particular attention to how that set is made, imitate the picture. I used a 1x2 and some floral wire to tie it on and yes, pre drill two holes to nail on the pole.
