That reminds me of seeing bushmaster heads (with 2" fangs extended) in gallon jars of corn alcohol in the Amazon. Buy a dipper full for 200 Sucres back in the day.

I once saw a bundle of a couple hundred of them at the Seattle Fur Exchange. Probably the last moles ever sold a auction. But even then it was quite an oddity. I do remember old guys talking about trapping them for their fur though.

Very Cool Mark

My Father told me he sold them for 10 to 15 cents. This would have been in the late 20s. It is how he got started trapping. He did not have any traps, but he had a dog that would dig up moles. They would go out in the fields and Rover would get the moles. Dad skinned and dried them round and sold them at the local general store. That is how he made enough money to buy his first traps. Western Washington, so they were Townsends but he did say occasionally they would get a brown mole ? and those were not wanted.
Years later a fellow near me trapped moles and he said he sold them to a lady who made fur coats for Barbie Dolls. He was protective of his market though and I never found out who he sold them too. He took that to his grave.

We sell a lot of mole skins throughout the year.
They must be fresh caught and that most certainly isn't every mole by a long shot.

Slit up the middle and skinned round like a beaver , (with tail, feet and nose removed)
they are scraped and dried using metal push pins on cardboard.
When moles have a lot of color on the belly, they are slit up the back.

* Mole skins in the fly tying / fishing industry are used as 'dubbing'.
Formed around a hook shank to make the body of a nymph .

Feel free to look at my photos over on my FB page

Moles only eat insects ??? !!!

The bulk of a mole's diet is earthworms and the last time I checked, earthworms are NOT insects
. wink

I would guess moles wouldn't hesitate to eat baby mice, voles or other rodents they came across too.

I remember lectures in animal science of talk of the 1920-30's mole fur boom, major problem was the stomach content was very acidic and would dissolve the belly hair so in tanning this would sluff-off ,so buyers had a expensive mistake in the end.

A few years back there was mole skin at the gathering in Evart Mi. I been watch for some the past few years to show my customer's how soft the hides were. I have not seen any in a few years.
