Well, its the 3rd season with the kibler woodsrunner .54. I passed a lot of bucks last year and downed a mega spike the last day of the season. I really wanted a nicer buck this year. I passed on more this season and got it done at the end of general season. No need to wait for heritage season! I traveled into a new drainage that has now become my favorite. After crunching a mile in on thick frost on the trail from rain the previous day, I got my ol trusty army wool socks out and got to sneaking. It amazing how much more quiet a guy can be. I immediately saw a doe, but she was alone. At about 3 miles I bumped a doe at maybe 25yds. I saw her bounce, but through the thick stuff she couldn’t get a bead on me. I waited a moment and decided to creep 10 more feet to a lane. As soon as I got there I saw him. I couldnt see his rack that well. That said I could see enough, and he made the cut. His vitals were in a little opening and unlike the bow, I know when I’m on those short irons, the line of sight is the shot. The cloud of smoke went and when it cleared he wasn’t on his feet anymore. What a great way for my 10th notch to be a 10 pointer. Hes a short tined deer for sure, but this mountain deer will eat well

Unfortunately, my boys (2 and 4) couldn’t see the kill like last year. That was the only bummer of the day. I got the 89lb pack down the trail and they were very happy to see daddy.

Earlier this year, I also got a turkey at 65 paces offhand and a doe at 40 sneaking like I usually do. Throw in the cow with the longbow and this guy is ready to feed a family! Hope everyone is having luck and if not Im passing it off to you.

The last photo was taken by a friend. I guided him and some brothers on a bunch of mulies in east MT. While out on the prairie we pass lots of dog towns. Theres only one way to unload the ol flintlock. Showed the boys what that gun can do. Might be the first man to ever shoot a prairie dog with a flintlock leaning off the hood. Something about it just felt right. 89 paces ore so!
