Last year & this year, Catching boat loads of possum. Hardly any coons... I have no explanation. It's the same property I've been trapping for 10 years.

Just a weekend trapper...

Disease is certainly a possibility. If its ag land, the crop rotation might have coons located closer to Agricultural food sources (corn, sorghum, soybeans). The acorn crop will have a locating factor in the eastern U.S. Here, the dens (isolated hollow trees, rock/concrete slab piles, abandoned beaver holes, etc.) close to cornfields with be occupied with more residents than dens located in large hay/pasture or solid timber, areas. Assume you are in winter conditions so raccoon activity is reduced according to temps and snow. Warmer pleasant autumn weather will reduce activity travels. Sometimes they den early sometimes later. Opossums seem to be able to venture out more than coons here as their fat reserves are less. Been my experience. ...................the mike

Short Track, we got the same situation here....loads of possums very few coon. Keep thinning them out. Consider using the baited coni boxes if legal, even the little 155 size traps put a hurting on them. Where the coon go or went is anyones guess as previously mentioned... lots of variables.

We need Gronewald to start shearing possums for felt. Or, to mix with their wool, like is done in Australia.
