Anyone here have much experience weaning bottle calves, what is the best way and what age is best? Does the cold weather have much bearing on when to wear? Do you cut back to half twice a day or go to once a day? Anyone with experience?

As long as they old enough and are eating hay and grain fairly well you should be ok to wean. We generally water their milk down a little more each day for 3 of 4 days leading up to weaning. Cold weather shouldn't be too much of a concern as long as they are big enough. How old are they? What is their weight like? What breed are they?

I've got two jerseys, 10 weeks and 10.5 weeks, going out on a limb I'm guessing 75lbs they are eating grain, alfalfa and some hay, I'm guessing 3lbs of grain, some days more other days less , I limit there alfalfa, I think they would eat it till they busted open if it was available. They're each getting a gallon of milk daily, half morning half evening.

If they are actually only 75 pounds I would keep them on milk longer. That seems small for that age. But it sounds like they are eating their other feed very well, if they are eating that much Then I would have to think that they are bigger than you think.

We usually wean ourselves around four months, if they are eating hay well and drinking water they should do well, other than the bellering. They’ll stop after about a week.

Yeah I'm guessing you're right on that probably closer to100 lb mark. Lot bigger than when I got them.

We used to raise 250 plus for local dairy replacement
Weaned at 8 weeks.
Start putting grain and water at about
six weeks.
Never raised a calf on hay or silage.

usually after the second bag of milk replacer, provide a good calf starter feed and keep a little free choice hay available. Also important is fresh water.

Just the right amount of whelm.
