I'm only somewhat certain louis was the author but the book follows the story of a rifle, I belive it was a civil war Era gun. Towards the end the gun is used as a wall hanger over a fireplace and a ember hits the flash hole and an old charge kills a kid. The gun is then thrown off a bridge and retrieved by someone who was in the river.

Anyone know what book I'm trying to remember?

How many have you bought 2 or more times when they changed the cover art and there is no way to remember every book title you have at least for me. I got a few duplicates that way over the years.

I recall the story but not sure who the author is but I definitely read it when I was into Louis L'Amour.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

"The Ferguson rifle" is a louis lmour story but different plot.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I had about 15 books then found the whole set of Leather Bond books at a gun store for $325 so I bought it. So yes I have some duplicates.

x2, Might have been in a short story collection, but I don't think so.

My wife will do me a favor every once in a while and buy one of his books for me. The good part about getting old and somewhat forgetful is that I get about half way through it before I remember reading it years ago. smile

Sounds like a cool book, but not a L'Amour. I’m another that’s read every book he’s written.

I thought he was great when I was kid, but when I got older his 1920'/30's mores seemed kinda antiquated.
