Got a call to pick up a roadkill deer in town I put them on the lake as a draw station I can see the pile from my back patio door I trim the trees in the yard for a shooting lane. It’s funny to see the wife and I not being able to pass by the picture window without checking the bait, by Feb it looks like we have OCD issues.

It takes weeks for them to come out in the daytime the more competition the sooner they play beat the other yote to the dinner bell. Takes up to month some years and the breeding season brings in multiple yotes that’s quite the scramble after the first pop. With late ice they are getting close to being past prime some seasons but it should be ok this year. I walk the dogs at all hours it’s not uncommon to hear the yotes howling then no shortage of them here.

The set up.

I do that too off the shop bench. 285 yards to the RK deer staked on the ice. A cell cam alerts me.

I found the same thing about looking lol. Never go by the window without a look! In the spring I have to untrain myself to stop checking for a coyote…

I wish I could do that. Unfortunately there are lots of houses on the opposite shore that make it unsafe for bullets ricocheting off the ice. I need to rely on my trapping skills which leave much to be desired.

My wife used to work in a butcher shop. He cut deer up and she would bring home the heads and legs plus some meat trimmings. I had to wire and stake them down or they would carry them away. I would love to do that now what with the night vison scopes that can be had. The only trouble with that set up was come spring time I had to go pick up stakes, chewed wire and lots of bones and chewed up deer heads. Darn leg bone can put a serious hole in a tractor tire.

If it’s subzero and the snow is dry I put a gallon of water on snow that I pack around it to freeze the carcass down on the ice if not they will drag it away out of the shooting lane to cover. Posted that once and some guy had a fit that I carried water out on the lake. It’s the best way I know of but he had a strong option that I did that. It’s in the sled so it’s no big deal I never could make sense of his malfunction.

I’ve been doing the same thing for several years now. Have shot over 50 coyotes from my house window. One bit of advice I will share, put a garage door alarm on the bait station. I purchased a cheap one , censor has batteries and 1/2 mile range, put receiver in my bedroom electrical outlet. Lets me know whenever something is on my bait.

I drive rebar stakes thru the ribcage and into the ice. They are visiting but only after dark so far.

It sometimes takes weeks for them to show up in the daytime here the more tracks you see the sooner they start coming out in the daytime the competition drives them.

Killem law dog. I’ve killed a few so far on my bait. Usually 15- 30 every year. Right out the shed window. Shots are close under 30 yards. These three were .22mag kills.
