There’s lots of it around when people put up fur. My garbage man hasn’t complained yet, but some day he will.
Who uses coon fat for bait piles?

Coon around here eat suet cakes. This would make them cannibals?
My coon carcasses go out in a field and get eaten by eagles, hawks and other birds during the day. I’m sure other critters feast on them at night. Do you think canines would eat this fat?

No k9's wont eat coon carcasses unless starved into it or if its been cooked. The rendered fat makes oil not tallow.

If you keep it clean and render it, coon fat makes a great cooking oil. And coon cracklings are great snacks.

A friend of mine wanted the big boar raccoons for the fat he said he was making lotion for his hands I never seen his, finished product .
To get a large chunk of firewood to start burning faster in the wood stove we'd add some fat to the fire from time to time also it worked good for that also .
I always enjoyed skinning a few late season raccoons after a bunch of coyotes because the fat would soften my hands as the coyote fat seemed to dry them out , yes that was before I wore surgical gloves to skin everything !

Buddy of mine puts it in his wood stove.
I do too. Makes instant heat and smells like popcorn. Caution......A little goes a long ways.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I use it for a winter time patch grease for shooting my flintlocks. A little goes a long way. One nice fat coon would render enough grease for years of shooting. How do you carry it or do you pre-grease the patches?
Eh...wot?

How do you carry it or do you pre-grease the patches? I pregrease my patches, or a roll of patching material if I am going to cut the patches at the muzzle. I store it in small tins (4 oz. size) in the freezer. It is very soft at room temp. Still soft at 10 degrees. I warm the tin on a coffee mug warmer and dip a patch in. Squeeze between 2 dry patches.

Interesting, thanks k snow. This past weekend we shot at 13 degrees. I over greased them and they were tough to load. It doesn't take much, and they typically slide down the barrel easy, like spit patching. I would err on the side of too little rather than too much.

Rubbed into leather boots its good water resistant. Waterproof for a few hours. Wont rot out stitches like some stuff.

I dress barktan hides with rendered coon fat.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I would err on the side of too little rather than too much. Could I store a coon grease lubed patches and balls in my ball block like I do with these pre-lubed patches or would it go rancid over time? ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/12/full-272-278779-img_0140.jpeg)
