Do these dogs make a good trap line dog? Wanting to get a squirrel hunter for the grandkids but also would like to have a trap line dog. Are these good double duty dogs?

Got a dog with some cur in her, blue heeler .
Makes a good trapline dog, and for only 25 lbs she don't back down.

I have a Mountain Cur dog and yes they make a good Trapline dog as well as an excellent companion.

I considered a feist but the curs are a bit more bulky. Figured a cur might hold up a little better if it got in a tangle. How's the cur for hunting Grandpa?

Curs are a great all around dog. There isn't much "back up" in them....they're full throttle. Ours is a mountain cur, but about any of the curs I think would suit your purposes.

They have a cur breed 30# or under? a Lacey maybe?

Mt Cur best dog I have ever had. One thing I did wrong with mine was not take him out of the yard except when we went hunting. After a couple of years, he thought when he left the yard, he was supposed to tree a squirrel, coon, or possum. A cur would be a great dog - but start taking him with you when he is younger. They are pretty feisty on game, but easy to train. They are pretty adept a killing an AR coon - they would probably have a lot more trouble with one of those 30 lb northern coons - but they would dang sure try. They will defend your family until they are dead.

My female Border collie, "super dog" was death on coons, woodchucks and squirrels if she could catch one. Tracked deer like a blood hound....best dog I ever had...
she probably was around 45#....If I ever get another real dog, I'd prefer something a little smaller that would still handle coons around the place.

When I speak of Cur’s I am speaking of the ones that I have been around my whole life. They were breed by my friend’s family for the last hundred years or so. They are blackmouth curs and crosses throughout the years.
Good family dogs that guard the house. They are not great at anything but good at many things. They hunt close compared to hounds. They are good cowdogs and hog dogs.
They will tree coons and squirrels. They will track wounded game. Around thirty years ago they stopped hunting deer with them and breed out the desire to do so.
Like most dogs they want work. If you can’t give them work, they get depressed. They live to be with you and are very smart at just about anything. Being a good trapline dog is easy for them.
It’s sad but before long they will be gone. Texas is getting broken to pieces by developers and forcing ranchers and farmers out.

How do they do with cats? I would like to run traps on drags but a dog is a must since I trap and work a full time job.

Some of them do very well..Look into the Kemmer Stock Mountain curs. They use a lot of them for big game out west. Also, I know a guy or two who used them for trapline dogs
I just have Original Mountain Curs and have never tried mine on cats.

I am not sure. Mine would just circle and bark at a yote. He would do the same thing with a coon - and then jump in when he had a chance, but he never jumped in on a yote. I would suspect he would do the same thing with a bobcat - but would dang sure want to be close the first time or two. Mine would bay a snake but when I got close, he would jump on in. He did that with a copperhead one time, and grabbed it by the head. Snake bit him on the tongue and about killed him. He was more cautious and sensible when out of his yard. He was protective of his yard and all things in it - except he did give our house cats a shaking every now and then.

Have any of you guys running these dogs for fur ever used them on pheasants?

I have not, but we would put out quail for our bird dogs and if my cur came across some late that had escaped, he would often point them for five or six seconds and proceed to hunt them up. I believe they would take to pheasants fairly easily

Had my Amish special cur for over 12 years now. Goes with me everywhere around the farm and up and down road. Protects my wife around here from our mean tom turkey. Not the best hunter but a very good companion and farm dog.

I would look at Kemmer curs or Stephens stock curs. Kemmers have been the best line I have seen hunt coons and squirrels. Personally, I would rather have another feist again. Just like the smaller dogs. Better vision and alertness but generally hot nosed. Few barks and they tree a coon but won't run one a half mile.

I can't take my blackmouth cur on the line. She dives headfirst on any catches, even the coyotes. She will destroy the inside of my truck if i don't let her out. She is crazy. lol
