My uncle was a world class sailor. He had movies of conditions like that when winning transatlantic races from Chesapeake Bay to Copenhagen. Sailboat. I crewed for him a few times on Lake Michigan but never in stuff like that. This was in the 70’s when I was young and stupid.

Lake Superior live entering the ship canal from Lake Superior. When the lake is angry the waves break over both sides of the breakwall which is normally about 10 feet above water level. Surface temp right now is probably around 40 degrees.

I was stationed at the Coast Guard Group Duluth in 87. Had to cross the lift bridge almost daily.
Had to spend some time out in a 44'MLB on those waters. Thankfully Nothing as angry as those in the picture.

Only driven along Superior a few times in my life. That lake scares the crap out of me!!! I read a book this summer, Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. Some of the Captain's last words on the Edmund Fitzgerald were, "Big seas, never seen anything like it " Cannot imagine having been on a ship in that kind of weather. Also didn't realize how many other ships were out there that night?

Never realized freshwater lakes could get that violent, but those pics certainly tell otherwise.

This is two minute vid from last month on Superior...chilll you right to the bone just watching it. Did a lot of snowmobiling on the Superior watershed back in the day. Unbelievable ice formations on the shoreline from the gale force winds.

Seen some really big waves on Lake Ontario... but those on Superior are massive
