Your thoughts on a 338 federal in Alaska

It's just a dream but is my rifle adequate for everything ?

Just curious, what game are you after and what's your longest shot you'd take?

Buzzard, that gun will take care of anything on the continent. People kill moose with 243’s, but it all comes down to shot placement.

Anything from deer to bears, I am very confident to 300 yards

Prefer 100 to 150 tho

338 federal shells are not poor made shelĺs and are quite expensive

The rifle is sighted in with federal 200 grain bullets

For all around here in NC, I use fusion 185 gainers

Works great on on ground hogs to dear

I bought a Ruger 338 many years ago, and have used it for elk and deer and moose, but I bought it for Grizzly bear in Alaska

Probably never get the chance to now, age and cost has run to high, but I know it would tip most anything over with the proper load and bullet !!

Just load heavy for bear, and shoot where you need to, they won't walk away or run for that matter !

No problem as long as you do your part. I'd use a heavy bullet and I think I'd be looking at the Barnes TSX 210 grain.

I don't think I'd choose it for sheep or goats just because of the possibility of longer shots being required. I wouldn't make a habit of using it over 200yds. It's almost the same as a 308 out to 250. But after that you're getting into substantial bullet drop. The nice thing about that cartridge is much less recoil than the 338 magnums and it can be built on a short action if that is what you're used to.

It has nothing to do with the shell or the weight. You wouldn't use a fast expanding bullet on a bear and wouldn't use a bonded bullet for a deer. You need the right bullet for the game your hunting.

I used a .338 win mag for years. Shot a 250 grain Speer grand slam bullet. Longest sheep kill was at around 750!
