Looking for some good old Montana boys on here that can give me some Info on mule deer hunting! It’s on my bucket list and it’s gonna be a complete diy hunt just looking for any tips on where to start! This is not a post begging for anyone’s honey hole just looking to be pointed in the right direction!

Check out Randy Newberg on YouTube. Mostly all public land hunts.

Can you climb mountains? The mountains have the biggest mule deer, but you gotta work for them. Big reduction in out of state liceneses for next year d/t die off. Most people on the TV and with outfitters are happy to shoot the little 20"- 24" 4x4's, which are tiny mule deer, but mostly what you'll get in eastern Montana. If you are happy with that, hunt BLM in eastern MT. Most private lands in eastern MT are leased to outfitters. Most of the state lands are surrounded by private, and you will not be allowed access to the state land. At least you will not run into grizzly bears in much of eastern Montana, except along the rocky mountain front. Alot of areas are draw only for bucks.

The western 1/3 is primarily public ground, so you can go anywhere you like. Timbered and steep. much better bucks. Just find a road to some high country and glass and you'll see bucks. Wolves have really decimated some areas deer populations. I didnt see a single mule deer in my high country hunting place last year, but will admit a poor effort on my part.

If you don't mind hiking, I can help you with some areas in NW montana.
