I’ve never been much of a coffee snob. Folgers or Maxwell House, black, nothing fancy.

But man the name brand store coffee just sucks anymore.

I just opened a new can of Folgers and it’s dried out garbage.

There’s a million and one of these little “boutique” coffee businesses, are they any good? They don’t appear to be cheap, but at this point I’d pay the extra if it’s good, rather than throwing $20 away on cans of cra9!

Folgers has changed something over a year ago
So far Maxwell House hasn't changed, but it won't be long until they do
At that point I'll take up alcohol again

Are you really paying $20 for a can of Maxwell house and/or Folgers? My local grocery has them routinely for sub $10.

I do agree, the last can I opened didn’t have the same level of freshness or smell.

I bet you're referring to my post.

The base in the eggshells balances out the acidty present in coffee. Makes for an entirely different cup of joe.

Perfectly said! Dry and barely smells like coffee with minimal flavor. If you have a Costco, try the big metal can of Kirkland Dark roast. It is like $20/can now or maybe more, used to be like $13 a couple years ago.

Happy trapping! ScottW

$14.99 for the short cans, $18 for the tall ones.

And yes, the freshness. Open a new can and it looks/smells like a can that’s been open for a month. You brew a pot it should stink up the whole room and smell amazing. Even my wife, who has the olfactory senses of a coyote says she can’t hardly smell the stuff anymore.

THAT..is the craziest thing I ever heard. The acidity is what makes a good cup of joe.

I used to be a Folgers guy but now I'm getting Premier Roasters Classic. I'm paying $28 (it's gone up) for a 48 oz can but it's well worth it because it's great coffee.

Back in the 70's I worked for a Dun and Bradstreet marketing division. We had a few coffee giants as clients.

There was a spike in coffee import prices and the public revolted. Many customers swore off coffee. Some temporarily switched to tea. Coffee was too expensive. Once the price came down, coffee sales rebounded.

Manufacturers learned that volatile retail coffee prices spooked their customers. The companies took efforts to stabilize prices at a somewhat higher price so they could absorb future wholesale bean price swings without having to change retail prices.

Decaf coffee was more expensive to produce so to keep its price on par with regular blend, the cheapest beans were used to manufacture decaf products.

Coffee beans are more expensive this year than in the past. I expect the brands are being forced to use cheaper beans and methods to hold prices as low as possible. This could explain why your favorite brand does not taste as well as it did in the past.

Coffe bean prices have gone way up like everything else.

American Pride Roasters is the coffee I order when I want something good. It's out of Des Moines, IA. He's a bit of a history buff and a lot of his blends and flavored coffees have a historical reference so you can learn or teach a bit of history with every bag. Some of the other blends are named for podcast shows he has sponsored over the years.

Folgers is weaker than it was in the past not as robust like before that fancy stuff turns my stomach they over do it. Starbucks is motor oil won’t touch it. Farmers Brothers is a better coffee but it ain’t cheap.

Just get some arabica bean French Roast.
Someone mentioned Costco (Kirkland), that probably isn't too bad of a suggestion if you aren't a coffee snob.
