Dale Billingsly has some good YouTube info... tries to never drown one in footholds or snares.

I occasionally catch them up high and dry. I generally just blind set their trail, or right at the tree that they're cutting on. If they don't have access to water, predators get to be an issue. I short chain with a bunch of swiveling, usually use a Bridger #3 so that I grab them high on the front leg.

Snares for sure work. But if there dragging cut branches things could get a little iffy.

My tip…don’t do it…unless your buyer pays for feet.

Like Sam said set up where they are cutting trees. Not my preferred method, but it works, and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

You must be limited in your options.

Back when PA limit was 3 beaver per season, my old man always let the little ones go so he could catch bigger ones to fill his limit. Not every location is good for it, must avoid entaglment issues, but we typically fastened to an overhead limb to act as a spring, like a fishing pole. I still use that trick, but you have to pick the right spot, next to a tree would not be my first choice.

Glenn Sterling used long chains and went for the back feet using his MJs. A snare would work well if you can use them there.

Snares are the way to go. With the right activity you don't even have to wear boots to beaver trap.lol

I have caught them in snare up on the bank on trails. Never set snare up for drowning

I got a good lesson about how beaver can jump and will come come at you. I got lucky he ran out of cable i sure wasn't fast enough to get out of the way.

Leaping beaver, that’s good information to have. Hope to see a couple a little later this morning.

Snare is my choice.
It can be a little tricky getting them down though.
When I could trap, it was illegal to use a firearm on them.

Why couldn’t you dispatch one with a firearm?

I believe that is the rule for all aquatic mammals. I believe part of the reason is Water doesn’t compress easily.

Snared a ton of beaver on dryland. But also areas with low or little water.
Dam crossovers, caster mounds, trails up and over culverts on ponds and implement roadways, slides, trails to standing corn where they are feeding, trails to areas where they are cutting trees, small narrow ditches from one body of water to another or a food source. You name it. You can carry and set a lot of snares,
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
