Here are pictures of just a couple of the red fox we have caught this year. Over the course of probably the last 5 years we have seen a big increase in red fox in our area. Just wondering if anyone else has seen the same?

May God bless you and yours

In this area it seems the less coyote you have the more red fox you have. The last few years I have caught quite a few coyote in my area and this year it seems like there is a lot more fox sign then in the past and not so many coyote.

I find this fascinating. Is it the coyote population either going down or not present where they live? Is it a habitat issue? Or maybe it’s just a prey issue?

May God bless you and yours

There seems to be a slight increase in the reds here...coyote population is about the same.

I get a few pics of them on deer cameras occasionally several miles from any residential area.

Coyotes IMO definitely affect the fox population. When I was growing up in NYS fox where everywhere. Both red and grey. Once coyotes got established there was a big, notable decrease in the fox population.

Even where I am now. many of us have knocked the coyote population back within a few miles of town and even the farmers tell us they see more fox.

This is super interesting, out here in Wyoming they really seem to coexist just fine, obviously I see more fox right around the border of agriculture and desert land but many times I've jumped a fox or two and a coyote off the same dead pile

Used to be lots of reds here and no grays. Now we have grays, coyotes and no reds at all.

Hey Chad we are definitely in a coyote decline and a red fox rise. At lest that’s what we are seeing.

Not here we hardly catch any, been on the down swing now for atleast 5-7 years now.
I miss catching them.

We have lived here now 26 years, early 2000's it would 40 to 70 a year.
I think between parvo and mountain lions they stay slim to none.

Let me sugar coat this

I saw the same thing in NY years ago but although coyote populations have stayed stable, the red fox numbers have really increased. We see them and tracks everywhere and the last time I trapped coyoyes in 2023, I couldn't keep them out of my coyote sets. Coyotes were killing trapped reds that year as well.

Greg, I’m seeing that coyote populations by me (Cuba-Portville area) seem to be down while the red fox are on the rise. The thermal hunters are knocking the coyotes down quite a bit around here. It is nice to see the reds around, just wish the greys would make a comeback as well.

Nevada had none, then they started showing up on the East side of the state about dead center on the utah border. Every year trappers seem to be catching them a little more west and north and south of that first location. I know they wont end up in the Vegas area, but if they get closer, I'll have to make the drive to try to catch them.

If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

Nothing much for improvement here But our snowshoe population tanked in the mid 80's and never came back for most of my life i had a large carcass pile mostly coon Even the crows and ravens didnt pay a lot of attention to it Nowdays a coon carcass doesn't last more the 2 days so maybe prey species in your area has a lot to do with coyote depredation

In my area we have a healthy population of both fox and coyote but seeing a large increase in grey fox numbers. When I started trapping 15 years ago a grey fox was a very rare catch . Mostly reds and coyotes at that time. Now the last few seasons I catch 3-4 times more grey fox then reds. I catch grey fox and coyotes in the same areas , even in the same sets but never a red. The reds seem to hang around closer to houses, pits and people in general now. Even the farm ground seems the greys have filled the niche that the reds used to have as a small predator.

We used to have a good population of reds and greys in my early days of longlining. I would catch near 50 / 50 ratio of reds and greys in those years. Now its mostly coyotes and a few reds thrown in every now and then. With all the thermal hunting as of late maybe the effects upon the coyote population will drop off and allow the reds to come back.

Tony, my propery is totally inside the State Park where there is no night hunting and no rifles. No one is hunting coyotes other than incidential coyote taken with shotgun slugs during deer season.

I take more fox dens than coyote dens these days.

It’s always amazed me how fast fox re-populate those coyote free pockets.
