Fat cows brought $1.86 this week here on the hoof. $2.25 a pound hanging is a steal. My kids have been getting $3.50 a pound hanging and have people waiting in line.

Assuming your buying it live weight for 2.25? If not your getting a steal or a down cow.

No thats what I pay the farmer when it hits the scale at the processor. I pay the processing separately it was in the low 400s last year. So ballpark 100lb cow processed should be about $2,700

Im not sure of all the terms used in the trade. And I dont remember the conversions weight from on the hoof to in the freezer pounds received. But I thought it seems like a good deal.

I supect the freezer will be about empty by May the boys only shot I think 8 deer this year and the only beef left is a few roster and about 20 lbs of ground. So the cow and our meat birds is we raise should hold up tell deer season come back in.

even the cheapest of the cheap burger is 4.99 a pound at the grocery and not the same quality at all.

I may still have the toung form last years in the freezer I will ask my wife if she knows or go dig and see.

Always planed to do something with them but never have. Always request them figuring if nothing else its dog food..

What's all is involved in the prep would rather eat it myself.

Tongue is way to good to make into dog food.

2.25 live weight for a 1000 pound cow is too high.

I think "cow" is being used liberally here.

Ever thought about raising your own beef? Sounds like you've got some pasture and such.

That could be. A grain fed young beef would change things instead of being a "cow" though at a 1000 pounds its not fat and its sure not going to be choice beef.

Yes i have plenty of grass and have put in 1200' of water lines. I dont have it fenced or cross fenced. All my fence is falling down or ther is none where they split the farm up when it was sold.

I would not buy a beef at 1,000lbs that beef is not finished out.most animals dress around 60% of live weight.i bought 1 from the neighbor years ago that dressed right at 600lbs it was the worst meat I've ever ate.when I asked him about it a couple months later he admitted it wasn't very good and he gave me my next half at a reduced price.in my opinion 1400lbs is about right for live wt and corn fed and when I say corn fed iam talking on full corn as much as they can eat every day plus hay for roughage I know alot of people feed corn silage but I think they taste better on a steer stuffer full feed .

We feed quite a few steers and heifers out. Steers went out at right around 1450 plus and the heifers around 1325. We also had a real good average of cattle qualifying for over seas shipping. Feeding them right added a nice bonus to the pay outs.

The last one I sold about 2 months ago I charged $3.40 per pound hanging weight and it hung at about 850 pounds. The customer paid all processing on top of that. It was the first time I ever charged that much, market conditions forced me to raise my prices considerably. Only a year and a half ago I was at $2.25, but if I didn't raise it to that I would have gotten more money just taking it to the sale barn. Even after the raise in price I figured I only got about 200 more than I would have gotten at the sale barn and Its much more hassle.

I found it cheaper for me to buy the ribs and new yorks when xmas sales were going then fill in with ground beef I grind at home from on sale chuck roast and bottom round roast.I bought 4 whole ribs and 2 whole new yorks thru the xmas season this year and paid 6.99 a pound thru various stores Fred Meyers and safeway. I see regular ground beef on sale this week for 3.98 ln in 5 lb rolls and the same store has 4.29 top round, I'll be going today and getting 20 lbs of each to grind together giving me a good lean ground beef at 3.64 a pound. Now I'll only need to go to cash and carry when out and about and get a bag of ibp tri-tip roast for 5.59lb and I'll have close to a years supply of beef for the 2 of us.So for around 980-1000. I'm willing to work a little to save money but when you figure 20 dollars a week for a couple eating mostly steaks I think it's worth it.When I had kids i would buy a half of beef but I'm a meat cutter so never paid to have it cut and neither of us really like roast so this works best for us.

I have a buddy raising 2 right now that go to the locker early May. My 1/4 will cost me $500 for him and $200 is the locker fee. Will be 1400ish pounds by then fed cracked corn, stake maker and good hay.

Ive ate jersey before and was very good but the steaks weren't very big compared to beef.
