Here's what happens to them at my place. Been losing castors and oil sacs to this pair...

Notice my successful bait was oil sacs. They'd been ignoring peanut butter completely.

More rats Carl! Do you have lots of rats that live in the woods out by you? Here they are rare unless by a crick, farm with grain stored or a town. Those pics would be good in the next longspring thread.
Are those #1's?

That melanistic rat is cool. Is it a Norway rat or another species? I've only seen black coloration in domestic Norway rats and black isn't very common in them.

Keith, the bellies are always lighter on roof rats ( black rats). Most of the 70+ rats caught in the last year around my place were norways but we got some black rats too. The black rats are quite adept at getting up into the rafters to get things I have hanging.

Turtle, those are old Victor 1.5 long springs.

Sorry, fellas, no rat put ups. Got bigger rodents that more urgently need getting put up.

I wondered if that was a roof rat/black rat. I have heard they are more common in the South. Maybe they need more mild weather, like you have, to be common. I've only seen Norway rats here. We are supposed to have small populations of pack rats and black rats. I think it would be neat to see what you could find in a pack rat midden in a populated area.

The black rats are supposed to be better climbers. I've seen Norway rats climb as fast as squirrels. Do the black rats jump when climbing, like squirrels do?

Keith

Gross. It takes you so long to catch them, they have probably already reproduced a dozen more. Your house built on the old city dump or something?

Couple of years ago there were no rats around. There just everywhere last year and this though. We have a couple of black walnut trees that feed them plus this time of year my carcass pile and scrapings in the fur shed.

Lots of chicken raisers around that don't control them is making the problem. I think my place is where they come to die.
