… what kind of pipe to y’all run ? … this pvc we got will bust fairly easy Yes pvc breaks too easily. Pex is pretty resistant to breakage. I have pex out in the barn where it is froze up most of the winter. The only spot that has ever broke is where I have a 2 inch long piece of pex between 2 brass fittings. I have to replace that little piece every year. PS the water to the heifers is still running, It's -4 degrees out right now and that water pipe just lays on top of the ground for almost a mile. If you have it running enough it won't freeze. People have you confused by telling you to let it drip. The colder it gets the more water flow you need. A little drip only works if it is hardly at risk of freezing to start with. I don't for the life of me understand why southerners pipe their water to the attic. That makes absolutely no sense to me.

I wonder too why they run it in the attic, wouldn't it be hot in the summer? I guess if ya had a slab house, that'd be the way to get it around without going under the floorboards.?

I have an addition on the backside of the house that's for the washer/dryer and a toilet. Its not heated and if we keep the door closed (which we do) the water line out to it will freeze when its single digits for a spell unless we flush the toilet once every couple hours.

I've know quite a few people that bought older homes and had to replace old leaking water lines. Instead of tearing out the sheet rock walls, they ran the water lines through the attic.

Yes sir… it’s under ground… it’ll bust at the well or in the attic
… have to drain everything from the well to the faucets to get the water out when it’s under freezing for a few hours or they’ll bust
… shoot even had one pvc elbow bust even after doing all that a couple years ago
So your outlet at the well is above grade? If so build a little structure over it, use an electric heater to keep it warm. Here we call them well house heaters or milk house heaters. Doesnt take much, even less in your part of the world. Turn it on when you need it. The attic? Blow in some more insulation. Helps with cooling as well . I heat with propane, According to my electric bill it uses about the same amount of electricity to heat my house at 25 below as it does to try and keep it cool at 90 95. My dad's well house was insulated well enough that a coffee can full of coals from the wood stove would keep it from freezing if the power was out. Had to keep a close eye on the temp because that didn't produce a lot of heat, but it did the trick.

Bunch of well houses have a light in them, the heat from the bulb keeps them going.

Whether we are Americans in the North, or Americans in the South, we should all put the blame where it truly belongs, which is on those dastardly, maple syrup slurping hosers in Canada.
Keith You mean the people that just go about life as another day when the temps are -45 or colder?

Water lines in the attic is one thing but the amount of hot water heater's people have in attic's is crazy! Same with a/c units.
Growing up before climate change we had rough winters, several ice storms a winter below zero temp's, etc. Kept our well pump covered in plastic and left the water running at night, never had a problem. No clue why you can't have running water Savell in weather in the teens, lol.

If the power goes off...the shallow well water pump and any electric heat at the pump stops. Full water lines, if that happens, is bad.
Been down that road before...even here in the deep South.

For freeze ups around here we just let water drip from the faucets and that's usually good enough. …. Was here too for a while … until they stopped dripping lol You mean your electricity went out? Or you didn't have enough flow for your dripping. The only other thing for me would be to make sure the pressure switch right off of the tank didn't freeze up. I keep a light bulb next to mine when it gets real cold.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I’m thinking about going south…with all my chainsaws and my skid steer just to cut firewood and help southern folks make through the global cooling we are all about to experience…heads up, coming to a wood lot near you…

… shoot even had one pvc elbow bust even after doing all that a couple years ago If you're going to drain your lines: Some folks down around the lake here that have summer cabins only use them in the summer. They have a air fitting plumbed into the water line at the well. Shut the well down then hook up an air compressor to that air fitting and blow all the water out of the lines. Works good.

It was 27 below for a low last night, 29 below the night before. The water tub on the floor of my chicken coop did not have any ice on it. I do not run any heat in the coop. You people down south live in houses that are not insulated as well as my chicken coop.
