Bad weather here so its a great time to catch up on gun cleaning.

Watched several YouTube videos to see how other people clean their guns. Some are not so good some are excellent with everything in between.

One thing I have noticed is not one used Gun scrubber. I substitute gun scrubber for brake parts cleaner. Brake parts cleaner removes all oil and lubricant and is a whole lot cheaper than gun scrubber. I do this to wash off the oil that make have grit or filings or whatever in it. I know it will be very minute amounts but it makes me feel better anyways.

My order in cleaning a barrel is:

1. Run a dry brush through to push out physical pieces/contaminants.
2. Run a patch wet with solvent through the barrel. Wait ten minutes.
3. Run a brass/bronze brush wet with solvent through barrel 20 times down and back.
4. Follow with wet patch of solvent.
5. Follow with dry patch.
6. Wet patch with brake cleaner.
7. Dry patches til clean.
8. Do same process over until barrel is clean.
9. Follow with quality gun lube on a patch.
10. Finish with two dry patches.

If I need to remove copper fouling I will use 7.62 which is a very strong Ammonia based cleaner. I let it set for 8 mins and wipe out with follow up cleaning process to remove solvent. Patches will come out blue showing presence of copper fouling.

I use solvent on exterior and wipe clean. Then wipe with brake cleaner. Wipe with gun oil. Wipe with dry cloth.

I would like to hear what y'all do. Always up for learning something new.

Balistol mainly, #9 when bore needs it.

I use Boretech Eliminator and their copper remover if really bad. I also use their cleaning brushes and jags because a bronze brush or jag will turn blue and give you a false copper indication. I don't use anything ammonia based. The Eliminator works better than anything I have used before and it won't harm the bore. They make one for rimfire that deals with the lube or wax on rimfire bullets.

Interesting. Wonder if a warm brush would help in removing wax from a rimfire barrel? Not a smoking hot brush, just a warm brush.

Never clean the bore of a 22lr, once it's shot in with the ammo it likes.
If it gets wet inside the bore, just run 3-4 rounds through it. Done

I use Tri-flow for all my rifles, inside and out.

The carbon remover is great for AR bolt and carrier and this is the rimfire blend.

Agree, great time for oil changes.

I always thought my dispatch pistol was clean,
then came the Ultrasonic cleaner.

The only other change since google for me is
synthetic motor oil.
I now never run out of "gun oil".

I use the CLP on a clean bore after it's cleaned. I have always used Triflow on the outside of guns and the moving parts on a semi auto because it doesn't freeze in extreme cold. I have had them freeze solid and not function during a duck hunt with other gun oil.

You all clean your guns? lol I'm terrible about it. I usually (if anything) spray them inside with some brakekleen, then put a couple drops of gun oil where I think it may need it, wipe down the rest with a gun cleaning wipe and stick them in the safe. I have deep cleaned some from time to time but its rare.

I like using a abrasive cleaners. Iosso or jab bore pase on a patch with some scrubbing usually gues stuff nice and shiny real quick.
If I have time I'll just squirt a load of Hoppes down the barrel and let it work for a few hours or over night first .

I will do it use a nylon brush when removing copper with ammonia cleaner along with patches. Seems to go a bit faster.

You're supposed to clean guns?

Truck guns = Ruger MKIII slab side and a Winchester SX3 get cleaned maybe twice a year with a heavy dousing of cheap carb/choke cleaner followed by a misting of WD40. A couple vigorous shakes and a couple rounds through the barrel and back to their spots in the truck.
Rifles get a little more attention

I have several guns I clean with cold tap water, run some dry patches, oil everything up with wd40 and put them back together

Windex with ammonia for smokeless powder, and windex with vinegar for black powder loads. Few passes with a brush, then run dry patches till they come out clean.

I was told WD40 is a terrible lubricant to use on guns? Something about getting gummy and/or collecting every little dust particle... ????
