Geeze and we wonder why there are so many memes now. Looks like early version of something for nationa inquire. Would think if they did actually do that. Would have to have insulators of some type ever post, just like telegraph lines did.

That fence made enough power they even sent phone calls to the city folks demonstrated by the extra high corner post and the wire running up it. A better version of the Green Acres one, at least its the modern version and no need to climb the pole to use the phone !

As a retired phone guy, no way it would have worked. You would need two separate insulated strands for tip and ring.

It would seem to me that it would have to be insulated or it would fail with the changing weather.

Not much difference from that and a telegraph system!

Most folks don't realize that it was also used to recharge pacemakers and hearing aids.
It doubled as a convenient charging station for the early farming robots.
(Assuming one of them is a ground wire)

Barb wire fences were definitely used as party lines for telephones. Wood posts and/or pieces of broken glass were used as insulators for keeping the signal from being grounded. They worked but there was lots of static and distortion.

When I was in college, my girlfriend's family had a party line still. The neighbors were bad at listening to us talk. They lived in rural, dirt poor, Upstate New York. Their sewer line for their house just emptied above the creek at the back of their property. It was a very different way of life to what I was used to.

Keith

I highly doubt people wasted their time trying to talk on a barbwire fence.

It's even been talked about on here within the last 3 or 4 years. I don't understand why any of you would think it wouldn't work. It should have been covered later in grade school in US history with American inventors, including Alexander Graham Bell. The US didn't start out with phone lines and people made due with what they had in place.

I could see it working. Take two stands, with no charge on them. Phone would need a battery. The phone system in a mine was simple, two #12 insulated copper wires, phones with a 6 volt lantern battery. I know I’ve seen them work for at least 20 miles.

Unrelated but interesting…. I remember listening to the 1979 World Series on my locomotive parked 7 miles underground. I got a piece of copper wire, twisted it around the antenna of an AM transistor radio, and hanging it from the 440 volt DC trolley line over my locomotive. The trolley line picked up the radio signals from the outside.
