Years back there was someone on Tman who had a ton of first hand knowledge about guys hunting Jaguars in the U.S back in the 60s or so. Apparently the guides were buying Jaguars and bringing them north to sell hunts to rich guys, that left the impression there was far more Jaguars in the U.S than in actuality. I wish I could remember who posted about it.

Several youtube videos of Dale Lee talking about hunting them in South America. Pretty interesting. I do believe they get bigger than a Mountain Lion. I know Dale said they were a lot harder on the dogs than Mountain Lions.

I just looked it up. Those jokers are as heavy as a mountain lion. Actually, nearly twice as big. Unlike cougars, they are a "large cat", like lions and tigers. Large cats roar, cougars don't. Or so I've heard.

Yes the cats that roar are Panthera
Lion - Panthera Leo Tiger - Panthera Tigris Leopard -Panthera Pardus Snow Leopard - Panthera Uncia Jaguar - Panthera Onca
Other cats are Felis can scream but not roar
Mountian lion - Felis Concolor
EXCEPT for Cheetahs - they a Acinonyx Jubatas - due to is non retractable claws and other features, Cheetahs chirp like birds to call cubs and communicate

I went out to see some jaguar kills in eastern Ecuador. The farmer brought in a couple of cat tracking dogs from the coast but it didn't take long for the tigre to kill them both. I helped him follow some tracks in the jungle. I had a 1.75 coil spring trap which I placed over a track and it was the same size as the track. All we found of the remains of the last dog was an ear.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

They can get up to 400 pounds per my library on hunting them. The Mexico strain does not get that large, the big boys are down in the Matto Grosso and Bolivia. You want a good read find a copy oh Tigrero! by Sasha Seimel - I wont ruin it for you Yes, read this book and be prepared to hunt jaguar with a spear....

There is a member here who has a nearly 200lb book cougar fully mounted at eye level and standing there you can easily imagine the trouble you’d be in….
400lbs??? Guy’d need a bigger spear.
