Looking for our view on digging a couple holes ~18 inches deep ~12 inches across in frozen ground. This job will be done with spud bar and shovel. I'm thinking of starting a fire over both spots circle the spot with some rock etc.... If I tried this what would you think it would take in time to thaw out enough ground to be able to dig these holes???

Had to bury a cat once in ground that was froze down to 10-12". I put a bag of charcoal down in the circle I needed, lit it on fire, covered it with a 55 gal drum on bricks so it was 5" off the ground, when charcoal was all burned it was thawed.

You being form farther north then I and with your experience with it I might try it this week. Thanks

The charcoal might be the way to go in stead of some wood and gas to get it going hard and furious.

A lot of how froze ground digs is determined by the type of soil and how wet it was when I froze. I have used a pick ax on froze ground here and can't say I thought it was a cure all. I would use the fire. A bored hole with a brace and bit and some diesel may help. If you could get some heat below ground level it would help thaw the sides. As it thaws enlarge your hole and do it again. Throw some coal down the hole with the diesel.

i would agree yeah soil conditions is key if your digging in sand or clay or even topsoil or whats underneath the first foot of soil is going to make all the diference

Yep that would do it. Pretty heavy soil and was fairly wet with all the melt we have had so I would guess fairly deep frost. I could try one spot and see how it goes for time on one hole. The ideal thing would be a drum with both ends cut out. I had one and threw it away last summer. I knew better not to throw junk away. Lol

When we get the snowing/melting thing going on I don’t think I’d even try to dig a hole at times. In the past I’d bend my wolf fang drivers making sets and some I had to go back for in the spring. LOL It depends on if that ground has ever been worked before here,

I've read that WWII GIs in Europe would use a round or two of ball ammo from the M1 and a quarter pound stick of tnt to dig foxholes in the dead of winter if they needed one fast.

Would love to see that method demonstrated, lol.
