My granddaughter is fleshing coons and we are looking for ideas to keep hide from slipping on beam.

Use welding clamps to hold it in place. Also use a folded towel on the outside nose of the beam to lean against.

Attach a double triple folded junk towel that has good texture to her fleshing apron and make sure she puts her weight into the beam.

Seldom I think uses a donut shaped piece of plywood, the center of the donut fits over the tip of the beam and pinches the hide holding it, and the donut sits square in your sternum area so yo lean on it while you flesh
I haven't ever tried it but it seems like it would work well.

Old burlap sack between her and the beam. Lean on it.

I use a block of wood with a hole in it to bind the hide to the beam. I lean on the block. Block needs to be thick enough so the point of the beam doesn’t stick through the block. It’s a game changer. I learned about it on trapperman. I can take a pic of it tomorrow after work.

A big ol clamp may help and maybe set it almost horizontal for her? I struggle with that myself.
She can do it!

A very sharp knife for the neck and first part of the back cuts down on the pushing. Don’t let her get discouraged by making the odd hole, it’s part of the learning curve. (See wife sewing thread grin)

Don’t give her a sharp knife! If starting out she will cut so many holes she will give up. You may have to do the saddle on the coon because they can be tough. If they are about half frozen they flesh 10 times easier

utilize a burlap sack around her midsection over her skinning apron or an old cloth rag and lean her stomach against coons nose on the beam. As she gets past neck and head (Hardest parts), pull hide end nose down over beam and then lean back into hide with her stomach. Adjust height of beam to fit her best where she can use her weight when leaning into hide and pushing with knife so it doesntt slip

By nature and how I flesh - my mid section bares the brunt - she may not quite have enough weight and may adapt some

You can do most of the coon by sticking the leg hole over the end of the beam, Keep working the hide around until you get one side clean, then switch to the other leg. The hide stays in place nicely. Then put the nose over the end to clean up around the ears and shave the gristle off of the shoulder area. You'll usually have to pull the hide toward you to scrape the tail area and such, and that is when an old towel or burlap bag as suggested above comes in handy.

If you have an old pair of waders that you're not using and just cut off the legs about mid-thigh. Will keep that hide from moving around and will keep you clean and warm.

Watch how he uses a small pair of vice grips to keep it from slipping.
