Actually, CR would get the collarum in for urban work. But I honestly believe full snares can be safely used in urban work BUT it would take a very experienced urban trapper to know when and where it would be safe to do so.

Interesting. Are you sure? We have real snares, but any mechanically powered are illegal. I've never heard anyone from CR states mention their use.

You can't give up after one try, or even several. You need someone well versed in their use to educate them on snares.

The collarum uses a relaxing lock. The hurdle as you suggest would be the powered part. The longstanding fight and objection came from the GTA old guard against any cable on dry land. Some of those old guys would shoot you over it. If they could live with a CR then we can meet in the middle.

Also, next door Alabama allows powered foot snares so it's not like powered cable isn’t within the region.

I don't see that happening, getting over the powered part. A ram snare doesn't even need a lock. Too much gray area for it to ever pass IMO. And settling for CR's ain't in the middle. They are a terrible tool in practice for most every animal because they come with the no entanglement clause. That means they are hard to conceal, won't dispatch your catch leading to chew outs, and have to be constructed of large cable that leads to refusals, especially with no entanglement to help hide it. Sure people catch things in them, but they miss a lot and like I said the very common chew outs are hard on the animals.

There are some Missouri trappers using CRs that are racking up the coyotes for their live market.

How many are they missing or are getting away due to chew outs? I'll bet the most successful ones are using 1x19 3/32" cable, which is not in the BMP's if I recall correctly, 7x7 is the requirement. And I'd further wager they are checking very early in the day and are very professional. This isn't the case with all trappers in general.

I'm sure they are. Many other fur trappers are not. CR regulations vary state by state that allow them, but you originally said according to the BMP's and I think they are very specific and restrictive. I haven't seen them in years, so that may have changed??? Still with the objective of keeping the catch alive, they are very poor, by design, and in application when set legally, for fur trappers who are going to be the main users of the CR's.

I thought that passed last year. The guy that tagged along with us is something with the FWC and was telling me about it. Glad to see they finally got it passed.

I cannot counter anything you've stated as my snaring is limited to beaver. I use slim locks and microlocks on 42" of 1x19 5/64" cable connected to a 7x7 3/32" extention by a #6 barrel swivel & a 1/8" quick link. I make my snares.

I’ve never used CRs (never used any relaxing locks and I don't pay any attention to the likelihood of entanglement.) I don't use break-aways, but do put a loop stop on every snare.

I have never land snared, other than for beaver on a crossover. My non-targets have been a few otter and coon over the years.

I have not read up on latest BMPs either.......other than what Florida FWC has on their website related to this change..

My statement about using the BMPs to get snaring legal in Georgia is sparked from the fact that wildlife agencies give much more credibility to written BMP guidelines than any trapping association or "expert." That's just the way it is. The Southeastern Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies promote the BMP compilation as they liken it to published scientific research...whether we do or not.

An example of this: Florida just got most of their traps back because the FWC referred to and relied on the BMPs. It doesn't appear FWC took much advice from any expert or the Florida Trapper's Assn.

The process to get this thru has taken a couple years......meetings with stakeholders, public comment meetings, commission meetings, then back thru it all to tweak and change.

The cable restraint part I’m not a big fan of. I need to check the regs, I thought there was also changes made to pig cage traps as well.

I saw where there were hog/corral trap rules. Height maximum, no top on corral, etc...to allow deer and bears to easily escape.

Pretty good.....no difference than otter pelts from the entire southern US.

A lot of otters in Florida, too. Just have to use completely submerged BGs, according to new rules.
